The NBA 2K 99 Club should remain one of basketball gaming’s most difficult achievements. A 99 overall rating should recognize an exceptional combination of production, versatility, winning, and dominance. The complete package should distinguish a 99 from even the most exceptional 98-rated players.

The standard creates an interesting problem. NBA 2K has become cautious with its highest possible rating. Current superstars can produce MVP-caliber seasons, win championships, and still open the game at 98.

The NBA 2K26 ratings placed Nikola Jokić and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander at 98 overall. Giannis Antetokounmpo followed at 97, while Luka Dončić and Anthony Edwards opened at 95. No active player received a 99 overall rating for NBA 2K26, continuing a streak that dates back to LeBron James in NBA 2K14.

The real question is not whether NBA 2K should make 99 ratings common. The more useful question concerns whether the franchise has made 99 so exclusive that a genuinely exceptional season can no longer break the ceiling.

NBA 2K 99 Club Has A Massive Standard

The history of the NBA 2K 99 Club shows why the rating carries so much weight. Historical rating records show Kevin Garnett reached 99 in NBA 2K1, ESPN NBA 2K5, NBA 2K6, and NBA 2K9. Tim Duncan reached 99 in ESPN Basketball and NBA 2K6.

Kobe Bryant reached 99 in ESPN NBA 2K5 and NBA 2K9, while Chris Paul reached 99 in NBA 2K9. James reached 99 in NBA 2K9 and NBA 2K14. A detailed ratings history confirms the repeated peaks for Garnett, Bryant, Paul, and James, while historical edition records document Duncan’s 99 ratings.

LeBron JamesNBA 2K9, NBA 2K14Reached 99 during two different stages of his career

The historical record also shows that 99 was not limited to players late in their careers. Garnett, Duncan, Bryant, and Paul all reached the rating during established peaks. James became the last active player to reach 99 after his 2012-13 season with the Miami Heat.

The edition-by-edition record also shows that NBA 2K9 featured four players at 99: James, Bryant, Garnett, and Paul. James’ NBA 2K14 rating provides the clearest modern benchmark. The 2012-13 season produced an MVP, a championship, a Finals MVP, and one of the most efficient all-around seasons of his career. The accomplishments gave NBA 2K a compelling case for placing James at the top of its scale.

More than a decade without another active 99 does not mean the standard has become impossible. The gap instead raises a more useful question: what would a modern player have to accomplish to clear it?

A 98 Overall Is Not A Snub

A 98 overall remains an elite rating rather than evidence that NBA 2K is undervaluing a superstar. The distinction concerns whether a season or sustained peak warrants the game’s absolute ceiling. Jokić entered NBA 2K26 as the game’s joint-highest-rated player at 98.

Jokić averaged 29.6 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 10.2 assists during the previous season. The official ratings placed the Denver Nuggets’ center alongside Gilgeous-Alexander at the top of the initial rankings.

Jokić’s case for 99 rests on the unusual combination of scoring, rebounding, playmaking, efficiency, and offensive control he provides from the center position. The 98 rating recognizes that versatility without automatically placing Jokić’s performance at the franchise’s historical ceiling.

Oklahoma City Thunder’s Gilgeous-Alexander entered NBA 2K26 at 98 after averaging 32.7 points, 6.4 assists, and 5.0 rebounds. The guard also won MVP, the scoring title, an NBA championship, and Finals MVP.

The NBA 2K26 rankings therefore provide an unusually strong test of the maximum rating’s exclusivity. The central question is whether 99 should require an even more extraordinary combination of individual and team success.

Historic Dominance Should Break The Ceiling

NBA 2K should not hand a 99 rating to the highest-ranked player every year. A 97 or 98 player should be allowed to sit atop the ratings without automatically receiving the maximum. Finishing first in MVP voting should not guarantee a 99.

A 99 should require several factors to converge:

  • The player should be among the NBA’s unquestioned best performers.
  • The production should reach an MVP level over a substantial stretch.
  • The skill set should translate with very few meaningful weaknesses.
  • The player’s performance should contribute directly to winning at the highest level.
  • The season or sustained peak should belong in a serious historical conversation.

Stephen Curry’s 2015-16 campaign provides a useful benchmark because the numbers left little room for interpretation. Curry averaged 30.1 points, 6.7 assists, and 5.4 rebounds. Curry also shot 50.4% from the field, 45.4% from three-point range, and 90.8% from the free-throw line. The NBA season review records the Golden State Warriors’ NBA-record 73 wins and Curry’s status as the league’s first unanimous MVP.

The three-point volume made the season even more unusual. Curry made 402 threes, becoming the first player to reach 400 in a season. Golden State built the league’s best regular-season record around an offense transformed by his shooting range and off-ball movement. The official MVP release confirms the 402 threes, 30.1 points per game, 73-9 record, and unanimous MVP vote.

NBA 2K Needs To Reward Greatness

NBA 2K’s caution serves a legitimate purpose. A maximum rating loses some of its meaning if several players receive it every year. Relatively small statistical margins can separate the game’s best players.

The current ratings illustrate that philosophy. The official player ratings place Jokić and Gilgeous-Alexander at 98, Antetokounmpo at 97, and Dončić and Edwards at 95. The spread gives NBA 2K room to distinguish between several levels of elite performance without turning 99 into a routine designation.

The historical standard should still remain open to modern players. A dormant rating should reflect the absence of a qualifying peak, not an unwritten rule that the number belongs only to past generations.

The 99 Rating Should Create Debate

The best ratings debates come from meaningful distinctions rather than manufactured controversy. A Jokić argument can focus on his unprecedented offensive responsibilities for a center. A Gilgeous-Alexander argument can focus on the combination of scoring, MVP recognition, and championship success.

Historical comparisons make the debate more useful. A new 99 should encourage comparisons with the peaks that previously produced the rating. The discussion should go beyond asking why the highest-rated player did not receive the highest number. Rarity should follow the standard rather than become the standard itself.

End Of My NBA 2K 99 Club Rant

The NBA 2K 99 Club does not need more members simply to keep the debate alive. The better approach is to preserve the number as a genuine ceiling. No era of basketball should be permanently disqualified from reaching it.

Jokić and Gilgeous-Alexander entering NBA 2K26 at 98 shows how close modern superstars can get without automatically receiving the maximum. The next 99 should arrive because a player’s performance provides the evidence for it. NBA 2K should not feel obligated to revive a dormant club.
