The WWE Women’s Tag Team division has long been maligned for mismanagement, but with its champions, The Judgement Day, back in action, the WWE has finally been able to begin putting it back on track. There is still a lot of work to be done, but the division finally has some competition.
At Evolution 2025, Raquel Rodrigez and Roxanne Perez successfully defended their title against three other tag teams. In the two weeks since, Sol Ruca & Zaria have returned to NXT, and The Kabuki Warriors have not made an appearance. The third tag team that faced off against the champions, however, has been dominating the WWE mainstage. They are making a push to take the title for themselves at SummerSlam.
Out of the four teams in the ring at Evolution 2025, Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss were the least experienced pair; their first official match together was just a little over a week before the event. That, combined with the bare bones storyline around their team-up, made it feel as though the WWE pushed them together just for this match. The Women’s Tag Team division does not have a deep pool of competitors, which posed issues for finding three high-star power teams to face the Judgement Day for this title challenge.
Some expected the team to dissolve almost the minute the match ended. Now, they are center stage.
This might not have originally been the plan. According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, a Flair versus Bliss match was originally planned for SummerSlam, but Flair requested that the WWE keep the two together.
Flair is a big name in WWE. She has been with the company since 2013 and is a 14-time women’s world champion. Few women within the WWE have done as much for the company as she has. On the surface, it is hard to imagine why she would insist on this team-up. When Flair returned from an injury to compete in the Royal Rumble 2025, she did not get over with the crowd. It was Bliss, not her, that received the largest pop of the night.
Flair walked into the ring with the same Queen gimmick that she had been using for years and took home another win to add to her collection. Her victory was met with indifference. It did not resonate for a wrestler who had already faced criticism for being too pushed to win a big event for her first match back.
Since she teamed up with Bliss, the WWE crowd has warmed to Flair. Their ring work together has given a new depth to her character, allowing her to be the harsh heel who is slowly warming up to the more playful Bliss. The change in reception from just a few weeks ago is drastic. The crowd is chanting her name again, and she got cheers for flooring Rodrigez and Perez in her Evolution 2025 match that were louder than those she got for winning the Royal Rumble.
This pairing is working, and it makes sense for both her and the WWE to keep it going.
Flair and Bliss are scheduled for a rematch against Rodrigez and Perez again at Summerslam 2025, and the WWE has put in the effort to build up the match. The two teams have been battling it out in the ring every week since Evolution 2025, building a growing animosity that will explode when they finally face off for the title.
Flair beat Rodrigez on last week’s SmackDown. Perez attempted to interfere with the match to help her partner, which distracted the referee long enough for Bliss to deliver a pivotal blow on Rodrigez, handing Flair the match.
This week’s SmackDown, Perez battled back with a victory against Bliss. Another attempt at match interference by The Judgment Day sparked a brawl outside the ring between Flair and Rodriguez. Bliss chose to help her teammate outside the ring rather than deliver a finishing blow to Perez, who found the opportunity to take the win as Bliss climbed back into the ring.
That last match is indicative of the narratives going into SummerSlam. Bliss was willing to throw away a chance at victory to help her teammate, while The Judgement Day has shown, time and time again, that they will go as low as necessary to keep their titles. This rivalry is camaraderie vs cheating, and in only a week, it will reach its dramatic conclusion.
WWE has long pushed for shake-ups at SummerSlam, and this division needs one. We may be only a week away from the WWE Women’s Tag Team title changing hands. Even if they do not take home the title, this duo has the makings of a new star tag team. These are two of WWE’s most prestigious wrestlers whose team-up has been well-received. For the moment, they have nowhere to go but up.
Flair and Bliss have been a delight to watch in the ring. Their chemistry has been excellent, revitalizing the stagnant characterization of Flair. They are also establishing themselves as a formidable force in a division that needs more big names and winning over the crowd every time they step in the ring. WWE should keep them together for as long as they can, because they might have a new star tag team on their hands.
