On the latest episode of WWE Monday Night Raw, Bayley and Lyra Valkyria faced off in a best two out of three falls match. The winner heads to SummerSlam to challenge Becky Lynch for the Intercontinental Championship. Management has had the opportunity to elevate talent and create a workhorse title for the women, but has questioned the viewers’ intelligence by forcing them to consume the same product for months. After the tournament crowned the inaugural champion, these have been the only three featured in the title picture. They have botched this championship since its inception.
After winning the tournament in November, WWE has booked Valkyria lackadaisically. There wasn’t a noteworthy story around the Women’s Intercontinental Championship until WrestleMania in April, and the WWE couldn’t even get that right. Instead of elevating talent on the grandest stage, they booked the champ in a tag team match. The only purpose of the decision was to set up the Lynch heel-turn. They buried two championships in one foul swoop.
After multiple title matches between the two, WWE added Bayley into the mix. If this was an attempt to spice things up by adding a veteran, it has turned out rather vanilla. After Lynch won a championship triple-threat Sunday at Evolution, they needed a new contender. They were too daft to come up with even one new name, and thought two out of three falls was the answer.
Valkyria was victorious and is now the new number one contender. Bayley has turned into a glorified jobber, and with the athleticism of a tortoise, it’s hard to blame WWE. After losing her first title opportunity, only to get another and be victorious, Lynch has her opponent for SummerSlam.
After not finding room in the two-night WrestleMania the first year after being introduced, WWE now fails to make the Intercontinental Championship picture compelling for the first-ever two-night SummerSlam. Imagine seeing a juicy burger, biting into it, and finding tofu.
