Tommy Edman is the second baseman for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Only in his second season with the Dodgers, he has already shown how valuable he is to the team. After having an outstanding postseason last year, he is off to a spectacular start in 2025.
Edman has seen a huge increase in power this season. He already has eight home runs (tied for the tenth-most in the league) in 30 games played. He also has 24 RBIs on the year, which is tied for the eighth-most in the league. Additionally, his slugging percentage is .523, an increase from last year’s .417, and his OPS has increased from .711 last season to .811 this season. This increase in power has been very valuable for the Dodgers and has helped them stand atop the NL West with a 20-10 record on the year.
Edman is filling into his role perfectly this season. A large reason that he is doing so well is because he gained team chemistry last postseason. Edman was still adjusting to being traded to Los Angeles when the 2024 postseason rolled around. When the Dodgers made it to the NLCS, however, Edman came around. In that series, he had a .407 batting average, .393 OBP, .630 slugging percentage, and a 1.023 OPS; he also had 11 hits, one home run, three doubles, 11 RBIs, and five runs. These impressive stats earned him the NLCS MVP Award.
This was a pivotal series for Edman, and it’s when he truly became a Dodger. Edman went on to perform well in the World Series, too, with a .294 batting average, .400 OBP, .588 slugging percentage, and a .988 OPS; he also had five hits, one home run, two doubles, two stolen bases, and six runs. Edman’s clutch-time performances helped the Dodgers win the World Series in dominating fashion over the New York Yankees.
Not only does Tommy Edman provide the Dodgers with top-level play on the field, but he also brings calm leadership to the clubhouse. Edman is not a flashy player, but his humble approach gets the job done. He leads by example, and the Dodgers need this type of player in order to be successful. They are a team full of superstars, so having a blue-collar player like Edman is the perfect balance. His humility and ability to remain even-keeled are characteristics that allow him to contribute so much to the Dodgers.
The Dodgers were very impressed with what they got from Edman last postseason, so they extended his contract through 2029. His new contract is a five-year deal worth $74 million. The Dodgers are looking to repeat as World Series champions this season, and Edman will be an integral part of that endeavor.
