The 2001 Seattle Mariners hold the MLB record for most wins in the regular season with 116. Could 2025 be the year that a team breaks that record?
The 2025 Los Angeles Dodgers are still without a loss on their resume one week into the season. They have a better chance than anyone to continue that success, and have a real shot at hitting 117+ wins.
The Dodgers have started their 2025 campaign 8-0, the best start ever for a defending World Series champion.
Even with that hot start, it’s safe to say that the Dodgers are still not playing the best baseball they can. They have trailed in six of their eight wins, they have not had a starter enter the sixth inning, and they have battled a number of injuries. Both Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman have missed multiple games, but the Dodgers haven’t missed a step.
With the early-season struggles with keeping the star players healthy, other names have needed to step up outside of the top 3 MVP candidates.
One of the things the Dodgers have done best over their recent success is finding those glue guys that come in and completely flip a switch.
Tommy Edman acquired by the Dodgers at the trade deadline last season, and no one thought too much of it. He has quickly become one of the better utility players in baseball for LA, winning last year’s NLCS MVP and becoming an everyday starter at multiple positions.
Another player that could fit this mold for the Dodgers this season is Michael Conforto. He signed a 1-year contract with the team this offseason, and could find himself making a start nearly every day and contributing in a major way throughout the season. Early on this year, Conforto has posted a .368 batting average while getting at least one hit in every game he has started.
On paper, the Dodgers have one of the best pitching staffs in baseball.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto is one of the better young pitchers in the league, and is alongside two former All-Stars in Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow. Add in rookie of the year candidate Roki Sasaki and Dustin May, who is returning after missing all of last season with Tommy John.
Don’t forget about former three-time Cy Young winner and MVP Clayton Kershaw when he comes back from injury, and possibly Shohei Ohtani as well later on this season.
The Dodgers have been one of the better regular-season teams in baseball for the last several years, hitting 100 or more wins in 3 of the last 4 seasons. This includes 111 wins in 2022, which is tied for the 4th most in a season.
Early on, this team seems more than capable of hitting 117 wins and possibly even more as they start their quest for back-to-back World Series championships.
