The Los Angeles Lakers have reportedly signed free agent wing Matisse Thybulle to a one-year deal worth $3.3 million. This is a move that had been rumored for about a week, and now it’s been completed. ESPN’s Shams Charania was first to report the signing.
Charania has reported that Thybulle spoke with Lakers coach JJ Redick and star Luka Doncic about the decision to sign with the team.
Who Is Matisse Thybulle?

Thybulle was drafted out of Washington with the 20th pick in 2019 by the Philadelphia 76ers . He was praised for his defense out of college, and Sixers fans quickly saw why. He became one of their best defensive players and made his way onto two all-defensive teams.
Thybulle was given a larger offensive role when traded to the Portland Trailblazers. With this opportunity, he showed great progression. In 132 games played for the Trailblazers, his 3P% climbed up to 37%
Injuries have been a legit concern for Thybulle. Ever since being traded to the Trailblazers he has faced numerous injuries that have held him out for a long period of time.

The Lakers adding Thybulle gives them a true perimeter lockdown defender who can play really good spot minutes when needed. They won’t rely on him too much, allowing him to be just what he is. A defensive lock.
Thybulle led the NBA in steals and deflections per 36 minutes last season among players to play at least 20 contests, per ESPN Research. He shot over 41% from three the last two seasons. If that trend continues, the Lakers may have gotten the best value signing of the offseason.
Los Angeles Lakers Offseason Outlook

The Lakers have already had an incredible offseason as they revamp their roster post-Lebron James. The addition of Thybulle on a minimum contract just expands that even more.
They don’t have much flexibility remaining, but they are still heavily involved in rumors throughout the NBA. Jonathan Kuminga is the main player they have their eyes on at this moment. A sign-and-trade for him would deplete some of their depth, likely including Dalton Knecht. Thybulle could be viewed as a replacement for pieces given up in that trade to get Kuminga.
