NBA free agency is one of the most important parts of the offseason, as all 30 teams look to reshape their rosters before the start of a new campaign. While the 2026 free agency period officially began on June 30, several notable players remain unsigned as August approaches.
Every front office enters free agency with a different strategy. Some prioritize retaining their own talent, while others look to add impact players from around the league. Although many of the biggest names have already signed contracts, there are still several restricted and unrestricted free agents capable of making a difference during the 2026-27 NBA season.
Before examining the remaining talent, it’s important to understand the difference between restricted and unrestricted free agency.
Restricted free agents are allowed to negotiate and sign offer sheets with other teams. With that said, their current team has the opportunity to match that contract and retain the player.
Unrestricted free agents have complete freedom to sign with any franchise without their previous team having the right to match the offer. This gives veteran players the flexibility to choose the best situation available.
Several talented young players are still waiting for new contracts, headlined by Jalen Duren, Peyton Watson, and Bennedict Mathurin. Each player has shown tremendous potential and could become an important piece for a contender or rebuilding franchise.
Detroit Pistons center Jalen Duren is coming off the best season of his career. The 23-year-old averaged 19 points per game while earning his first NBA All-Star selection and an All-NBA Third Team honor.
Although Duren struggled during the postseason, causing his chances of receiving a maximum contract to decline, his age and overall talent make him one of the most valuable restricted free agents still available.
Peyton Watson enjoyed a breakout campaign with the Denver Nuggets after seeing an expanded role during the 2025-26 season.
After averaging just eight points per game the previous year, Watson nearly doubled his production to almost 15 points per game before suffering a season-ending injury that forced him to miss the first round of the NBA Playoffs. His two-way versatility should continue to draw interest around the league.
Bennedict Mathurin has already gained valuable postseason experience despite still being early in his NBA career.
The Clippers forward previously helped the Indiana Pacers reach the 2025 NBA Finals, finishing just one win shy of a championship. Mathurin averaged 17 points per game during the 2025-26 season and continues to establish himself as one of the league’s most promising young scorers.
While the restricted free agent market is filled with young talent, several accomplished veterans also remain available.
DeMar DeRozan, Russell Westbrook, and Bradley Beal may no longer be in their primes, but each player still possesses the experience and skill set to contribute to a playoff-caliber team.
DeMar DeRozan was recently waived by the Sacramento Kings as the franchise committed to a full-scale rebuild.
The six-time All-Star averaged 18 points per game during the 2025-26 season, down from his career average of 21 points per game. His reduced offensive role reflected Sacramento’s emphasis on developing its younger core during the latter part of the season.
Russell Westbrook also spent last season with the Kings, serving as the team’s veteran point guard and leader.
The former nine-time All-Star averaged 15 points per game while mentoring Sacramento’s young roster throughout its rebuilding process. Although his role has changed over the years, Westbrook’s energy, leadership, and experience remain valuable assets for any contender.
Bradley Beal enters free agency looking to rebound from one of the most difficult seasons of his career.
The former three-time All-Star appeared in just eight games for the Los Angeles Clippers because of injuries, finishing the season with career lows in points per game, minutes played, and shot attempts. If healthy, Beal’s career average of 21 points per game makes him one of the most intriguing scoring options still available.
Although the top names from the 2026 free agency class have already signed, there is still plenty of talent available entering August.
Whether teams are searching for young players with long-term potential or experienced veterans capable of helping a championship contender, this remaining free agent class still has plenty to offer. The biggest question now is which franchises will capitalize on these opportunities and which remaining free agents will make the biggest impact during the 2026-27 NBA season.
