India’s medal hopes on the Final Day rest entirely on judo and track cycling. Olympian Avtar Singh headlines the judo program in the men’s -100kg category, while Ishroop Narang competes in the women’s -78kg division. Yash Ghanghas also takes to the mat, all looking to add to what has already been a historic Games for Indian judo.
Track cycling offers India’s other remaining chances at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, with Ronaldo Singh Laitonjam competing in the men’s 1000m time trial final. Dinesh Kumar and Harshveer Singh Sekhon contend in the men’s 40km points race. Para cyclist Lisha Das rounds out India’s program in the women’s C4-C5 1000m time trial final.
Beyond India’s events, the velodrome hosts six gold medal finals in total to close out the cycling program. Paris 2024 medallists Emma Finucane of Wales, New Zealand’s Ellesse Andrews, and England’s Sophie Capewell are featured in the women’s keirin. The Games’ final event of all is the netball gold medal match between Jamaica and New Zealand. It closes out the entire 215-event program at the OVO Hydro, with England and Australia meeting for bronze beforehand.
Saturday’s session secured India’s place in Commonwealth Games history. Indian boxers won a record seven gold medals in a single edition of the Games, a haul no nation has ever matched, previously held jointly by England and Canada at six apiece. Sakshi Chaudhary, Preeti Pawar, Jaismine Lamboria, Priya Ghanghas, Arundhati Choudhary, Sachin Siwach, and Ankush Panghal all won gold. Lovlina Borgohain, Jadumani Singh Mandengbam, and Narender Berwal added silver.
Judo continued its breakthrough Games as well, with Unnati Sharma winning bronze in the women’s -63kg category. She added to Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh’s historic gold medals earlier in the week, India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games judo golds.
Judo and track cycling are India’s only remaining events, so the final day offers a smaller but still meaningful chance to add to an already record-setting medal haul. Avtar Singh’s judo campaign carries particular weight given his standing as a Rio 2016 Olympian. India’s track cycling squad looks to close the Games with one final podium finish at the velodrome.
