Tarik Skubal is the golden goose of this year’s free-agent crop, and he may well end up somewhere incredibly unexpected.

A two-time Cy Young winner, Skubal is expected to command a contract in the $350–500 million range. Naturally, the teams expected to pursue him are the typical big-market ball clubs, such as the Yankees, Dodgers, and Mets. One team, however, may be ready to swoop in and land the superstar southpaw: the Chicago White Sox.

MLB insider Jim Bowden listed the South Side outfit as a potential landing spot in his column yesterday, citing the White Sox, Mets, and Dodgers as the most likely destinations for Skubal.

How Could the White Sox Afford Tarik Skubal?

The White Sox’s remarkable turnaround this season is no accident or outlier. Two years removed from a historically bad 2024 campaign, the organization has bided its time and committed to a long-term rebuild. The team spent much of the early 2020s shedding high-end contracts and assembling a new core through the draft, trades, and internal development.

The turning point came last winter, when the White Sox pulled the trigger and signed Munetaka Murakami to a two-year, $34 million contract. It was a statement of ambition from a front office that had largely remained stagnant throughout the 2020s. It also proved to be the crowning jewel of what became an incredibly exciting, young White Sox squad.

The White Sox’s young core and improving performance could make the team an attractive destination for a high-profile free agent, but signing Skubal would require a significant financial commitment. The White Sox ranked 26th in total payroll for the 2026 season, suggesting there may be room to increase spending. Whether the organization would be willing to commit $350–500 million to one player, however, remains an open question.

What Makes the White Sox an Appealing Option for Skubal?

From Skubal’s perspective, the White Sox are also an intriguing destination. They have a talented, youthful clubhouse full of belief in one another. The team rode that energy to an incredible season that saw them narrowly miss out on the ALCS. With its core players only expected to improve, there is reason to believe the White Sox will continue trending upward.

That trajectory is especially exciting for a pitcher who is still just 29 years old. Leading into the trade deadline this season, he made it clear that he wanted to stay in Detroit, even mentioning missing the team after he was dealt to the Dodgers. Evidently, he values the comfort of where he is at much more than just being a part of what could be considered the “best” roster.

Skubal would instantly become the team’s resident superstar and ace, while taking on a significant leadership role within the organization. That opportunity could be more appealing than joining teams like the Dodgers or Mets, which already feature perennial All-Stars on nine-figure contracts.

End of My Skubal Rant

While the White Sox may still be considered a long shot to land Skubal’s signature, it would be unwise to write them off. It would cost a pretty penny, as Skubal’s agent is the infamous Scott Boras. He is the best in the business when it comes to squeezing every possible ounce of money from all his clients’ contracts. An organization that experienced incredible excitement throughout the season may be inclined to make a statement unlike anything seen before.

As for Skubal, he may want to do something special by joining a team nobody expects. He could become the undisputed star in Chicago, the ace of the staff, and the face of a new era of White Sox baseball. Who wouldn’t be enticed by that?
