The Kentucky Wildcats have now notched four straight wins in Knoxville, with Mark Pope sporting a perfect 2-0 record there against the Tennessee Volunteers as both a coach and player. This victory lifts the Wildcats to a 12-6 season record, injecting fresh energy into their season.

Fix The Turnovers

Slow starts have been a recurring theme all season, and today was no different. The offense found its rhythm at times, but every time Kentucky closed the gap, Tennessee managed to stretch the lead again. Turnovers in a rivalry game are never ideal, but today they didn’t cost much as the win was secured. Still, the issues will need to be addressed sooner rather than later.

The Wildcats came back from a 17-point deficit to edge out an 80-78 win in a stunned Food City Center, as the Vols fell apart down the stretch. With the victory, Kentucky notched their fourth straight win in Knoxville.

Comeback Cats

Down by 18 points against the LSU Tigers, the Wildcats found another gear and pulled off a win with a last-second shot. On Saturday, they overcame a 17-point deficit to Tennessee, sealing the victory after Tennessee’s attempt to miss a free throw bounced off the rim. Jaylen Carey, the Tennessee forward, caught the ball on the end line and put up a shot, but the buzzer had already sounded, giving the Wildcats the win.

Denzel Aberdeen was the star for Kentucky, stepping up in a big way after facing criticism all season. Over the last two games, he’s led his team to wins, and with Jaland Lowe sidelined for the year, it’s his moment to shine. Scoring 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting, he showed the grit you expect from a senior who, just last year, was part of a national championship-winning squad.

Freshman guard Jasper Johnson was another standout for the Wildcats, scoring 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting and showing impressive poise and focus on the road. The team’s collective effort was key to the win, highlighted by Otega Oweh, who drew a crucial foul and scored after a steal from Collin Chandler in the final minute.

Postgame Scuffle

After the buzzer, Tennessee’s Jaylen Carey and Otega Oweh exchanged words, and a brief scuffle broke out. Both teams had to be separated, with Mark Pope sprinting from the far end of the court to break it up. The kind of thing you hate to see after a game, especially when it could lead to players being suspended or losing playing time. All things of this nature need to be avoidable at all cost.

In such an intense rivalry, and with Kentucky on the winning side, there were bound to be words and frustration. Thankfully, the coaches stepped in and broke things up before it got out of hand.

End Of My Kentucky Basketball Rant

The Wildcats have turned their season around, but they can’t afford to relax just yet. Earlier this week, Kentucky was sitting right on the NCAA tournament bubble, but big road wins over LSU and Tennessee—both quad 1 victories—have given them some serious momentum. Now, with home games against the Texas Longhorns on Wednesday and Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday, they’ve got a great chance to keep building their tournament resume.

It’s been a wild week for Big Blue Nation, with plenty of ups and downs, but after two big wins, the season is back on track. Keep the momentum going.
