Slow starts are becoming a concerning trend for the Wildcats, as the Tigers came out strong and maintained pressure throughout the first half. Kentucky couldn’t find their rhythm, managing just one field goal in the first 11 minutes and falling behind by 18 points early. The key to fixing this is rallying the team, like Mark Pope did in the second half, and grinding out wins—closing games strong instead of relying on buzzer-beaters. Still, tonight’s result is a happy win for a group that desperately needed it.
Andrija Jelavic stepped up for the Wildcats after being moved into the starting lineup to spark some energy. The confidence grows and he gets more chances, it can only benefit the team moving forward. The smart move by Pope, giving a much-needed boost to a squad that’s struggled with consistency all season, and the opportunity for Jelavic is an encouraging sign.

With just 1.6 seconds on the clock, Kentucky’s only hope was a full-court heave, praying someone would catch it and make a play. Moreno, not typically known for his mid-range game, nailed it—sinking the final shot as officials reviewed the play, sealing a thrilling 75-74 win in Baton Rouge. Moments earlier, LSU had a chance to put the game away after Oweh was fouled, but he missed one of two free throws, leaving the door open. The Wildcats seized the opportunity, and fans across Kentucky breathed a huge sigh of relief.
The wildest part is that the Kentucky women went into LSU and won on January 1, and tonight the men pulled off the same feat, both with buzzer-beating victories. LSU fans are probably tired of seeing Kentucky on their court and relieved it’s over. The fact that Moreno is a Kentucky kid makes this moment even sweeter, as this will be a shot and win he’ll remember for the rest of his life.
Winning on the road is never easy, and heading into Thompson-Boling Arena on Saturday will be another big test for the Wildcats. Last season, they swept the Tennessee Volunteers in the regular season, but this year they’re not facing the same team. Kentucky will need to come out fast and avoid falling behind early if they want a real shot at winning.
The Volunteers have faced some rough stretches this season, but whenever Tennessee and Kentucky meet, it’s always a physical battle that both teams gear up for. Rick Barnes, one of the best coaches in America, will have his players ready to compete. A win on the road against the Vols would be huge for this team and could really build momentum.

The Wildcats sit at 11-6 overall (2-2 in SEC play) and are heading to Knoxville on Saturday looking to build some momentum and get the season back on track. Despite recent struggles, avoiding slow starts will be crucial as they aim to resemble the squad that dominated the second half against LSU. A win on the road is still a win, and with plenty more chances ahead, now’s the time to make a push.
The NCAA tournament is still within reach. At the start of the night, Joe Lunardi, ESPN bracketologist, had the Wildcats as one of the first four byes. This win helps, but they need more—still, it’s a good start.
