Finn Balor needs a direction coming out of SummerSlam, and new United States Champion Baron Corbin needs a first challenger worth beating. A single match solves both problems.

Corbin took the United States Championship from Trick Williams at SummerSlam, becoming a two-time holder of the belt. Williams accidentally sent Lil Yachty into a table down the stretch. Corbin capitalized by smashing the title into the face of Williams and hitting End of Days for the pin.

The return itself was built on ambush. Corbin came back by crashing a Williams match against Carmelo Hayes and laying out both men, then walked off holding the championship in the air.

Ambush booking does not establish a program. A returning heel champion with a fresh belt and no challenger is a reign that starts drifting inside three weeks.

Finn Balor Came Out Of SummerSlam With Nothing

Balor was booked opposite Sami Zayn on Night Two in a number one contender’s match for the Undisputed WWE Championship. Nick Aldis expanded it before the bell, adding Gunther and then a returning Kevin Owens, and Owens walked out with the shot.

Losing a fatal four-way that started as a singles match costs Balor nothing in credibility. The real cost is a story. The Prince now stands on SmackDown with no title picture, no faction, and no feud waiting.

Judgment Day has been closed since before WrestleMania 42, where Balor brought back The Demon and beat Dominik Mysterio. Ten years after winning and surrendering the Universal Championship in the same weekend, the 45-year-old is running out of runway for another chase at the top.

The United States Title Is The Right Landing Spot

Balor as the babyface challenger gives Corbin something the champion has never really had. Bullying a smaller, faster opponent who fights back is the only version of the Corbin character that has ever worked, and Balor plays sympathetic without effort.

The result can go the champion’s way. Balor has spent the year protected enough that a loss to a returning heel with a belt does nothing to diminish him. Corbin needs a clean win over a genuine name far more than Balor needs another midcard victory.

A first defense against a former Universal Champion also legitimizes a title that has changed hands three times in 2026. Secondary championships live or die on the quality of the challengers, not the champion. The belt has bounced from Sami Zayn to Williams to Corbin since March, and stopping that rotation with a real program matters more than the next name to hold it.

End Of My Finn Balor Rant

Balor has spent four months proving he is worth booking and has been handed nothing for it. Very little on the SmackDown roster has been more useful and less rewarded across the same stretch. The Demon at WrestleMania. An undefeated stretch on SmackDown. A contender’s match that got hijacked by two additions and a surprise return. The reward for all of that should not be a fatal four-way loss and a month of nothing.

Corbin is not a long-term champion, and pretending otherwise wastes everyone’s time. The reign works best as a stopover that makes somebody else look good on the way out. Balor is the strongest available candidate to be standing in the ring when that happens.

SmackDown also has an opening the pairing fills cleanly. Trick Williams will chase the rematch eventually, and Carmelo Hayes has unfinished business left over from the return angle. Dropping Balor into that mix gives the brand a three-way midcard picture instead of a champion idling until the obvious rematch arrives. Building all of that requires zero new characters.

Book the match at the next premium live event. Let Corbin cheat, let Balor come within a heartbeat, and let the crowd leave desperate for the rematch. A United States Championship program with actual heat beats another undefeated streak against opponents nobody remembers by Tuesday.
