Vikings Draft QB Of The Future With 10th Overall Pick
The Minnesota Vikings have selected their future quarterback, taking J.J. McCarthy out of Michigan with the 10th overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.
McCarthy enters an offense with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson. He also joins a quarterback room with Sam Darnold, Nick Mullens, and Jaren Hall.
Vikings Trade Up To Draft Their Guy
After the shock of the Atlanta Falcons selecting Michael Penix Jr., I'm not surprised the Vikings needed to move up, even if it was only one spot. The Vikings sent the 11th overall selection and an additional fourth and fifth-round pick to move up to ten. New York also sent pick 203 to Minnesota.
I wouldn't be surprised if Denver were also on the phone with New York, causing the Vikings to make the move. The Broncos ended up taking quarterback Bo Nix 12th overall.
McCarthy's College Stats
McCarthy completed 72.3% of his passes for 2,991 yards, 22 touchdowns, and four interceptions in his final season with the Michigan Wolverines. He helped lead Michigan to a National Championship earlier this year.
While some have expressed concern about McCarthy's ability to indeed run an NFL offense (noting how much the Wolverines ran the ball in 2023), I think he has the potential to work out well in Minnesota.
The Vikings have an offensive roster that any of the rookie quarterbacks in the draft dream of, including the best wide receiver in the NFL in Justin Jefferson and a top tight end in T.J. Hockenson.
We've been told that Kevin O'Connell is an elite offensive mind. We're going to see the full extent of his greatness, as he enters his first season as head coach without Kirk Cousins behind center.
