"No Doubt" Fields Is The Future Of Chicago Bears. Here's Why!

Updated: Jul 13, 2023

The Chicago Bears selected quarterback Justin Fields with the 11th pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. At the time, this pick seemed like a steal for the Bears. Fields was seen as a precise number two choice after Trevor Lawrence whilst building up to the draft. However, Zach Wilson and Mac Jones went higher than him. Yet he has played some decent football for the Bears. People have been wondering whether Fields is the future for Chicago.

What Has Fields Done So Far?

It was an up-and-down rookie season for Fields which saw him take his first snap as a starter in week 3. He showed much potential as a starter in his second year in the NFL. Even though his team had a disappointing season with a record of 3-14, Fields had some outstanding games. The evidence for this is when you look at his PFF rating of 70.2. It improved his rookie year, where he had a rating of 64.2. For example, his sensational game against the Miami Dolphins. He threw for 123 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 178 yards. The performance illustrates the path to success for Fields is by using his incredible rushing ability. You can compare Cam Newton and Lamar Jackson to Fields. A comparison like this suggests that he has the potential to reach the MVP level, like Newton and Jackson.

Does He Need Help?

It is important to note that one of the Bears' roster weaknesses is needing elite playmakers, due to how poor the situation is around Fields. It would be interesting to see how much Fields' performance would improve with better playmakers around him. An example of this is how Dolphins’ quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's performance improved when the likes of Tyreek Hill and Terron Armstead joined the organization. You can see the improvement when looking at Tagovailoa's PFF ratings. Without the likes of Hill and Armstead, Tagovailoa had a 63.1 rating. Then with them, he had a rating of 81.9 which shows how important the situation around a quarterback must be.

Improving Field's situation must be a priority for the Bears' front office. Fields is going into his third year in the league. You usually see a big step in a player's development, so they must get the right tools. They have taken a step forward by trading for DJ Moore, a great addition, but more is needed.

There must be a sense of patience, as you can only expect Fields to achieve so much when not giving him the tools to do so.
