After spending the first four years of his NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, running back Najee Harris signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers. Upon his arrival, Harris made a not-so-subtle dig at his former organization during a press conference. Is it possible to have been correct while going about it the wrong way? He certainly stirred up some internet buzz with his comments on Friday.
There are conflicting takeaways from his time with the Steelers. On one hand, he looks like he runs through quicksand with jeans on; on the other hand, he never had sub 1,000 yards rushing in any season. Considering the Steelers’ poor offense over the entirety of his NFL career, with heavy reliance on him, Najee’s availability is even more impressive. The fact that he inked only a one-year deal raises some eyebrows. Is it that teams do not want to take huge risks at the running back position, or is there more behind the scenes that fans don’t know?
During his press conference in Los Angeles, Harris was brave enough to take a stab at the Steelers, but was too chicken to call them out by name. “It’s not like this everywhere,” said Harris, discussing the weight room and facilities. Harris continued by saying it reminds him of his college days at Alabama, and how he’s excited to be part of an organization that invests in their players. Finally, Harris is excited to work with his new head coach Jim Harbaugh. It will be interesting to see if Harris can prove the doubters wrong on this one-year deal.
His point is likely valid, but the passive-aggressive approach is rather cowardly. Najee should stand on business or shut up and get to work. The Steelers’ facilities may be outdated, but the beat-around-the-bush approach is not a good look.
