It’s looking increasingly likely that Liverpool will win yet another league title this season under Arne Slot. They are a club that has been fortunate to have a number of great soccer managers, who have collectively won 19 league titles for the Reds, along with six European Cups. These are the great soccer managers of the club’s past.

Bill Shankly

Shankly was a hero of the Kop and is the manager who took the club to new heights in the 1960s. Upon his arrival, Liverpool was a club playing in the Second Division, but Shankly took them up to the First Division. Here, he brought in numerous great players for the club with the assistance of the Anfield Boot Room, and they won their First Division title in 1964. Shankly also won Liverpool’s first FA Cup in 1965 and their first European soccer trophy, the UEFA Cup, in 1973.

Shankly had laid the foundations for the Liverpool dynasty that other Anfield Boot Room coaches would continue in further decades. Therefore, Shankly is considered one of Liverpool’s finest managers, having won six major soccer trophies with the club.

Bob Paisley

Shankly’s successor was Bob Paisley. He would pick up where Shankly left off by winning the league and UEFA Cup double in 1976. It was in Europe that Paisley took the club to even greater heights, as Liverpool’s European Cup teams began to make an impact. Paisley’s teams won the European Cup twice during the 1970s. Then, in 1981, they won their third European Cup, which was Paisley’s final triumph.

Overall, Paisley won a record 21 trophies with the club. The only trophy he did not win was the FA Cup, although they did reach the final. His overall record eclipsed even Shankly’s.

Kenny Dalglish

Dalglish was a great Liverpool player and manager. As player-manager for the team, he won their first FA Cup and league double in 1986. Dalglish won five more football trophies, including three league titles.

Rafael Benitez

Benitez almost won the Premiership title for Liverpool, as his Reds team finished second to Utd in 2009. It was in Europe that Benitez began restoring them to their former glories, when his team won the European Cup on penalties after a thrilling comeback against AC Milan in 2005. Benitez also took Liverpool to a second Champions League final, although they lost this game to Milan. Aside from this, an FA Cup victory against West Ham in the final won the FA Cup. Although two trophies are not the most for a Liverpool manager, Benitez was only one of four managers to win the European Cup.

Jürgen Klopp

Klopp is the best Liverpool manager in the Premier League era to date. He ended their title drought by winning the 2019-2020 league. In Europe, Klopp’s Liverpool teams had a notable impact, as they reached two Champions League finals, winning one of them. Klopp also won the FA Cup, World Club Championship, and two League Cups during his reign as manager.

End of My Great Liverpool Soccer Managers Rant

Arne Slot will emulate those great Liverpool managers if his Reds team wins the 2025 Premier League in May. Managers such as Shankly, Paisley, Dalglish, and Benitez won a number of domestic and European football trophies for the club. Thanks to them, the team has won a record number of trophies for an English soccer club.
