The Georgia Bulldogs were swept by the Texas Longhorns in Austin this past weekend in a much-anticipated SEC clash. The losses were reflected in recent polls, where the Diamond Dawgs (29-5, 8-4 SEC) fell out of the top five in the Division 1 rankings.

Texas Two Step

Georgia lost more games this weekend than it had all season, but it was not the only talented team to drop a series to a school from Texas. Former top-ranked Tennessee (28-4, 9-3 SEC) was surprised by unranked Texas A&M (16-15, 3-9 SEC) at home, losing two of three, including a double beatdown on Saturday.

Georgia Bulldogs Play Tough In Road Series

The Bulldogs entered the series leading the nation in home runs, but Texas pitcher Jared Spencer nearly shut them down in game one. Spencer only allowed two hits, including a solo shot by outfielder Nolan McCarthy, while striking out 11 in seven-plus innings. Game two was evenly matched until the Longhorns (26-4, 11-1 SEC) took advantage of Georgia relievers, scoring five runs in a sloppy seventh inning.

Game three went to extra innings, where a walk-off home run by Texas catcher Ryland Galvan closed out the series, boosting the Longhorns to No. 2 in the country. The news for Georgia is not all bad. They remain in a position for the top seed as they return to Athens for their penultimate home series.

Moving Forward

The Georgia Bulldogs return to Foley Field for a tune-up against the Presbyterian Blue Hose (16-17, 8-4 Big South) on Tuesday afternoon. This weekend, the Diamond Dawgs will host top-ranked Arkansas (30-3, 11-1 SEC). They will face a Razorback team that leads the SEC in batting average (.335) and has earned top-five numbers in pitching and fielding.
