There have been some great European soccer strikers who have starred in European soccer and the World Cup. Such players have been some of the best strikers to have played in the game. These are a few of the best European soccer strikers in the sport’s history.
Müller was a striker who starred for the German national team in the 1960s and 70s. Overall, he was a prolific striker for both club and country, having scored hundreds of goals for his club side Bayern Munich, and was consistently the top scoring player in the German league.
For Germany, he was particularly potent in the World Cup, where he scored 14 goals. These included 10 goals at the 1970 World Cup, where he was the top goal-scoring player. Then, along with this, he scored further goals in 1974, which helped Germany win the World Cup. This included a goal in the final against the Netherlands. Müller was also European Player of the Year in 1970.
Greaves was one of the finest English strikers. For Spurs and England, he scored lots of goals, which helped Spurs win the Cup Winners’ Cup, among other trophies. As an England player, Greaves was also a consistent striker and was the first-choice in the 1966 team until injury gave Geoff Hurst a chance to take his place. Overall, Greaves scored six England hat-tricks, which is a record for an England player. So, Greaves is certainly another of the greatest strikers in European soccer history.
Although originally a winger like Ronaldo, Henry was one of the top European strikers in the game. Henry had explosive pace, dribbling, and finishing, and was a formidable striker for club and country. For Arsenal, he scored a record number of goals for the club with 174 in total. Twice, he was also the European Golden Boot winner. With Barcelona, he was not quite so prolific but still scored many goals to help the Catalan giant win numerous domestic and European trophies.
In 1998, he won the World Cup with France and was the team’s top goal-scoring player with three goals. Then, the French won Euro 2000 with Henry playing further forward. He scored 51 goals for France. With scoring records set for Arsenal, Henry has a fantastic goal total.
Kane has been the most prolific goal-scoring player in England’s history, and he’s still going strong today. He has currently scored a record 76 goals for his country, and almost won the European Championship when playing for the Three Lions, with England reaching a couple of finals.
Kane’s form for his clubs has been just as good. He scored 280 goals for Tottenham, a record number for a Spurs player. Plus, Kane has broken the 100 mark for Bayern Munich. His many goals in the 2024/2025 campaign were crucial for Bayern’s title triumph.
Cristiano Ronaldo was originally a winger who gradually became a more central striker at Real Madrid under the coaching of Carlo Ancelotti. Ronaldo was initially reluctant to shift to a more central role, but Ancelotti’s tactical trickery during matches got him to play more centrally. At any rate, Ronaldo became one of the most prolific strikers in La Liga and European soccer history when playing for Madrid. Ronaldo racked up a record 140 Champions League and 311 La Liga goals.
So, those are five of the greatest European soccer strikers in history. Muller, Greaves, Kane, Ronaldo, and Henry were fantastic strikers who scored hundreds of goals during their playing careers. All five players won top honors with their clubs by scoring bucketloads of goals. Müller, Ronaldo, Henry, and Greaves were also crucial players for their international teams that won trophies.
