The fourth matchday of the Champions League brought with it some incredibly exciting games. With 18 fixtures played over two days, it would be impossible to mention all that provided fans with excitement and great football. The three mentioned below are just the tip of the iceberg.

A Showdown In Paris

Tuesday’s meeting between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich was a game that many football fans looked forward to. Both teams were in great form, leading their respective national competitions and dominating the Champions League. It wasn’t easy to say which one was the frontrunner; anything could happen on the field.

It wasn’t long before Bayern showed that they were the ones who had the upper hand. Luis Diaz put his team in the lead only four minutes after kickoff. He then solidified the advantage by scoring again, about half an hour later. The match could have been one of the highlights of his career, if it wasn’t for a grave mistake he made right before the break.

Diaz fouled PSG’s Achraf Hakimi brutally enough to be shown a red card that excluded him from the rest of the match. Despite playing against a team at a decided disadvantage, the Parisians couldn’t finish the game on a high note. They did score one goal, thanks to the effort of Joao Neves, but it wasn’t enough to save them from a painful loss.

The Struggle Of Los Blancos

Due to Liverpool’s recent struggles in the Premier League, many Real Madrid fans were hoping for some easy points to strenghten their position in the Champions League. They came into the game feeling secure in the team, only to see the dream of a smooth win desintegrate in front of their eyes.

Liverpool came into the game strong and quickly began dominating the field. They pressed Real from the very start. Los Blancos’ best player was, without a doubt, their goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois. He managed save after save, and was the only thing standing between his team and a truly embarrassing score. Unfortunately for Real, even he had his limits.

In the second half, Alexis Mac Allister’s shot made it into the net, putting his team in the lead that they would go on to take until the end of the match. The final score was very generous for Real; for them, the game could have ended much worse.

The Unexpected Draw

With both PSG and Real losing their respective matches, Barcelona had the chance to make up some points in the Champions League standings and equal the tallies of their rivals. They were seen as the stronger team on the field, so many fans expected a relatively easy win on the Belgian field. In reality, the match ended up being anything but. Without some of Barca’s best players, like Pedri or Raphinha, chaos crept onto the field, giving Club Brugge the chance to take control of the game.

The Belgians scored their first goal in just the sixth minute, forcing Blaugrana to chase the score. At no point in the game was Barcelona in the lead; they were always either equal or behind. The tense match, filled with stunning goals, VAR checks, and yellow cards, ultimately ended in a 3:3 draw, a result that wasn’t satisfying for either team.

End Of My Champions League Rant

The Champions League fourth matchday was filled with many surprises and even more excitement. It shifted the standings around, with the unstoppable Bayern now on the very top. Arsenal and Inter Milan are the only two other teams that have so far scored all possible points. In their current situation, Manchester City, PSG, Newcastle, Real, and Liverpool are also on track to directly qualify for the next stage of the championship.
