NFL fans on X sparked an interesting debate, pitting Cam Newton against Jalen Hurts. That is a sign that the world needs NFL football back. The offseason is filled with pointless arguments, but this one has a clear answer. It’s Philadelphia fans against real ball knowers. Cover those eyes, Eagles fans.

Crunching The Numbers

Breaking down the numbers through both players’ first five seasons, Newton clears Hurts. Newton started 78 games and went 45-32. He passed for 18,263 yards and 117 touchdowns while averaging 234 passing yards per game. Newton ran the ball 599 times for 3,207 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns while averaging 41.7 rushing yards per game. Hurts has started 66 games, compiling a 46-20 record. He has thrown for 14,667 yards and 85 touchdowns while averaging 190.5 passing yards per game. Hurts has rushed the ball 674 times for 3,133 yards and 55 touchdowns thanks to the tush push.

Newton made three Pro Bowls and one First Team All-Pro in his first five seasons. He also won the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 2011 and the NFL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year award in 2015. Hurts has made two Pro Bowls, but has won a Super Bowl and Super Bowl MVP, thanks to his juggernaut Eagles team. It is fun to take jabs at Newton, but put some respect on that man’s name. Hurts has time in the NFL to surpass him, but in 2025, Newton clears him.

Beyond The Numbers

Hurts has found more team success than Newton, but this debate is player versus player. Dan Orlovsky said that the teams in the NFC have to go through Hurts. That’s not true. They have to go through the Philadelphia Eagles. It goes beyond Hurts. Plenty of quarterbacks would work on the Eagles. No offense to Hurts, but he isn’t the engine that drives that team. He’s the rims and tires. They work well, but a better brand name is available.

Put Prime Newton on this Eagles team and see what happens. Newton was throwing to Ted Ginn Jr, Kelvin Benjamin, and an old Steve Smith Sr. Greg Olson was great, but there was no AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, or Saquon Barkley on those Panthers teams. When weighing all that, Newton comes out on top again. This isn’t rocket science.

End Of My Cam Newton Rant

The city of Philadelphia will always ride for their guys, and it’s respectable. Unfortunately, in this argument, they are wrong and loud. People forget how electric Prime Newton was. He didn’t have the luxuries that Hurts currently has. The Panthers’ defense was good, but not as good as the Eagles. Philadelphia boasts a superior offensive line and a wealth of weapons. Newton stood on business on his podcast. Everyone laughed at him, but he was right.
