The club can see the continuous rise of Lamine Yamal and his talent. This is why they are in talks with the Spain international in hopes of extending his new contract, which runs till 2026.
AS has revealed details regarding Yamal’s contract with Barcelona. According to the publication, Yamal’s contract, which was signed in 2023, will run until 2026. Back then, the club could only sign a three-year contract with their youth talents.
At that time, the understating was that Yamal’s contract included an extension until 2030 that would be automatically activated. Things aren’t the same now.
The conditions placed in the contract with the 2030 extension no longer reflect reality. Yamal’s value has skyrocketed as he had an extraordinary performance with Spain in the Euros.
The Spain international then came in eighth position at the Ballon d’ Or. Not to mention that people are already anticipating his performance in the next World Cup in 2026.
The club are trying to handle Yamal’s contract talks delicately. They are planning to make him the highest-paid player, but they are trying to avoid the mistake they made with Messi.
In 2021, the club’s debts, which reached more than £1 billion, made it impossible for them to afford the legend’s agreed-upon salary. This made him go on a free transfer to Paris Saint-Germain.
Now, Barcelona want to play their cards right. They are trying not to go overboard with Yamal’s contract since this could cause problems in the dressing room.
Right now, Yamal’s salary is one of the lowest in the team, but this is about to change. Barca, however, have to keep in mind that they shouldn’t upset their salary balance.
Talks are happening between Yamal’s agent, Jorge Mendes, and Barcelona. Last week, when asked about Yamal’s future, Mendes said “Lamine will stay at Barça, for sure.”
Mendes realizes how Yamal isn’t only beneficial for the club on the pitch, but also outside it. He is now part of Barcelona’s brand. This is why Mendes would probably want that to be reflected in Yamal’s new contract.
In my opinion, Barcelona should do everything they can in order to sign Yamal to a new contract.
Yamal is an essential part of Hansi Flick’s team, and he is of high importance to Barcelona themselves. He is the kind of player who you build a team around.
While extending his contract is necessary, Barcelona is right in trying not to repeat the Messi situation. How they would do that without upsetting the salary balance is yet to be seen. I definitely don’t envy them.
