Atletico Madrid’s defeat against Real Madrid in the Champions League was surrounded by a lot of controversy. The club’s president, Enrique Cerezo, has spoken about it.

Atletico Madrid have recently lost against Real Madrid in the Champions League after reaching penalties. VAR (Video Assistant Referee) played a role in the turnout of the game, and now Atletico Madrid’s president has slammed the technology.

How Did Atletico Madrid Lose?

Atletico Madrid’s loss against Real Madrid came after the team lost on penalties. They missed two penalties, including Julian Alvarez’s penalty.

Alvarez’s penalty has brought on a lot of debate as it was canceled by VAR. It was ruled out as a two-touch penalty after the VAR checked it.

Since then, people have been divided on whether it was a two-touch penalty or not. Atletico Madrid, for example, aren’t especially happy about how things happened.

Atletico Madrid’s Boss Is Furious

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has spoken about the controversy, and he had a lot of things to say about VAR. According to Diario AS, Cerezo said:

“Until Wednesday night we were ready for the three competitions: Champions League, Copa del Rey and La Liga. But that day, an incident with an aparto, a system or a terrifying tool, which is very bad, that is good for nothing more than to harm teams and that is called VAR, because they truncated one of the greatest illusions for us, which was to continue in the Champions League.”

He then stated that VAR has only made things become unfair:

“I don’t like VAR, but it’s not that I say it now, I’ve always said it. I don’t criticise the VAR for the mistake the other day. Because it’s not a mistake by the referee; it’s a VAR error. I don’t know where they saw the ball touch the same leg twice on a player’s leg. VAR is a conflictive tool, which is not safe and above all, we all believe that it was brought to make football fairer, and I believe that it has been brought to make it more unfair.”

VAR Is A Double-Edged Weapon

I can’t say that I agree %100 with Cerezo when it comes to VAR. What I believe in is that VAR is a double-edged weapon. Sometimes they make the right decision, and sometimes they don’t.

Some people might say that VAR ruined soccer, but the right decisions it does make are enough to keep it.

End Of My Atletico Madrid Rant

Atletico Madrid should try to move on from their defeat because things aren’t looking that great now. They have lost 4-2 against Barcelona in La Liga, which only made the title race more exciting.
