May is the month when teams in the 2026 FIFA World Cup will announce their selected squads to play in it. Most of the world’s best players will be there, but great players can also be left behind. There have been some great players who have never played in the FIFA World Cup. This is usually due to their teams not being good enough to qualify, or injury preventing them from reaching the World Cup. Here are some of soccer’s greatest players who never played in a World Cup.
George Best
Regarded by many as one of soccer’s great players to have played the game, Best never made it to a World Cup. With Manchester Utd, he lit up club and European football with fine skill, but unfortunately, his national team was never good enough to make the finals, even with his talents. Best never played in the World Cup finals.
Di Stefano
Di Stefano was a great attacking midfield player who was one of the European Cup’s best players. He starred in the great Real Madrid teams that dominated the European Cup in the 1950s, scoring 216 goals for his club, and is one of La Liga’s top goal-scoring players overall. However, at the international level, Di Stefano never played in the FIFA World Cup with Argentina, as they did not participate in the earlier World Cups and then failed to qualify for the 1958 World Cup.
George Weah
Weah had an excellent club career, most notably with AC Milan, where he won the Serie A title twice and scored 60 goals for the club. In addition, he was the top goal-scoring player in the UEFA Champions League and received the European and World Player of the Year awards. Playing for Liberia, his team was never good enough to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.
Ryan Giggs
Ryan Giggs was a pacey winger who ran past full-backs as if they were not there. Then he scored quite a few goals from midfield as well, with 168 goals for Manchester Utd. Giggs won many trophies, such as the Premier League title, the FA Cup, and the much-coveted Champions League with his club. At the international level, he played for Wales, who had few, if any, other players as good as Giggs and could not qualify for the FIFA World Cup.
Ian Rush
Another Welsh player, Ian Rush, was the hero of the Kop. One of Liverpool’s great players, the striker scored 229 goals for Liverpool, which helped the club win numerous league titles, the FA Cup, and the European Cup. Despite scoring 28 goals for Wales, they could not qualify for the FIFA World Cup.
Liam Brady
Brady was another of soccer’s greatest players who never had the chance to play in the World Cup. A great midfield player, Brady had superb technique and was a fine ball passer. Brady played most of his games for Arsenal but also won two Serie A titles with Juventus. At the national level, the Republic of Ireland did not qualify for the FIFA World Cup when Brady played.
End Of My Soccer’s Greatest Players Who Missed the World Cup Rant
Those are a few of soccer’s greatest players who never played a game in the FIFA World Cup. This was largely because of the players not being in teams not good enough to qualify. It was a pity, for they could have played some great games in the World Cup.
