Like most big European soccer clubs, AC Milan is one with a notable hall of fame. Their hall of fame includes many great international players who starred in the FIFA World Cup, Champions League, UEFA European Championships, and other cups. These are some of the best players who have starred for the Rossoneri.
Marco Van Basten
The arrival of Van Basten at AC Milan in 1987 ushered in a golden era for the club. Soon after, it was Serie A champions, and in further seasons, the striker netted 19 goals for the team, including two in the European Cup final with Steaua. Those goals ensured that Milan lifted the trophy, and Van Basten won two more European Cups with the club. He scored 90 Serie A goals in 147 games with AC Milan and 124 overall.
At the international level, Van Basten played for the Netherlands. The striker was influential in their sparkling Euro ’88 campaign in which Holland defeated England 3–1 in the group stage. During that game, Van Basten scored a hat-trick to sink the English. Holland reached the final, and in that match, the USSR played. He sealed Holland’s victory with a fantastic volley from outside the box, one of the championship’s great goals.
Andriy Shevchenko
Shevchenko has been one of the most prolific goal-scoring players for AC Milan. The striker played 322 games for the club and, during the period, won some trophies. One Serie A title was won along with the 2003 UEFA Champions League. In that match, Shevchenko scored the winning penalty during the shoot-out. With a total of 175 goals, the striker scored more goals for the Rossoneri than Van Basten.
Paolo Maldini
Maldini is another of the AC Milan legends who has been their most loyal player. Undoubtedly, among the best defenders in the world when he starred for the club, Maldini also played a record 902 games for them. With them, the defender won several Serie A titles and five European Cup/Champions League trophies alongside other cups.
At the international level, Maldini played hundreds of games for Italy and was one of their team captains. Although he won no trophies with the Italians, they were close in a few cups. Maldini played for the 1994 Italian team that reached the final and the 1990 team that reached the semi-finals. Brazil and Argentina beat both teams on penalties.
George Weah
Weah was another great forward who starred for AC Milan during the 1990s. Upon joining the club, Weah was FIFA World and European Player of the Year. The forward won two Scudetto titles with AC Milan, scoring 58 goals in 147 games played. Weah, however, never played in the FIFA World Cup, as Liberia did not qualify for the finals.
