The Philadelphia Phillies are struggling mightily. After getting swept in a four-game series against the Chicago Cubs and losing five of six to the Atlanta Braves, it is getting late very early for the reigning National League East Champions. The offense is underperforming at an alarming rate, the bullpen is wildly inconsistent, and the starting pitching is among the worst in all of baseball.

Offensive Woes Continue

The Phillies’ offense is abysmal to start the season, ranking 28th in runs scored and 29th in team batting average at .219. During the recent ten-game losing streak, Philadelphia scored just 26 total runs while allowing a staggering 69 runs. The offense, to begin the season, has been unbearable to watch with players like Alec Bohm, Bryson Stott, Trea Turner, and the tandem of catchers being dead spots in the lineup.

Bryce Harper is having a solid start to the season, batting .260 and holding an OPS over .840. Remove Harper from the lineup, and the Phillies’ offense would be nearly anemic. Though Philadelphia acquired Adolis Garcia this offseason, along with rookie Justin Crawford, neither has had the impact the organization hoped for, and the lack of additions is becoming painfully evident.

Starting Pitching Struggling To Go Deep

The Phillies should be dominating with Cy Young runner-up Christopher Sanchez, Jesus Luzardo, Aaron Nola, rookie sensation Andrew Painter, and newly reinstated Zack Wheeler on the mound. The entire starting staff, except Wheeler, has struggled beyond comprehension in the first month. Combined, Philadelphia’s starting rotation holds a whopping 5.80 ERA, putting them in the bottom three in all of Major League Baseball.

Taijuan Walker was recently released after another disastrous outing on Wednesday night against the Cubs. Walker pitched to a more than 9.00 ERA in his very early 2026 campaign. The Phillies replaced Walker with Wheeler after the perennial Cy Young contender returned from surgery that ended his season last year.

Philadelphia’s starters are not getting deep into games, a habit that became a staple of the staff last year. Starters have made it to the seventh inning just twice all season, and the Phillies still have yet to complete a shutout.

Bullpen And Defense Remain Hit Or Miss

The bullpen has already featured several key injuries that have hindered Philadelphia’s ability to lock down the later innings of games. Jhoan Duran was placed on the 15-day Injured List with a strained left oblique, and right-hander Jonathan Bowlan was placed on IL with a groin strain. These two key pieces of the Phillies bullpen will be much welcomed when they return, as the club is struggling late in games.

The defense has let Philadelphia down on multiple occasions early this year. Crawford has played a well below average defensive center field, and even Bryce Harper has negative three defensive runs saved. Edmundo Sosa, the right-handed second base platoon bat for the Phillies, has committed several costly errors in the field, leading to the opposition capitalizing on the mistakes.

End of My Philadelphia Phillies Rant

Philadelphia is letting the season slip through very quickly. Manager Rob Thompson’s job security has become a topic of major discussion over the last few days, with many believing he could be fired this week. The offense needs to find a way to get more hits, as they are 26th in total hits this season.

At the start of the season, nobody believed the Phillies could miss the playoffs, but here they sit in a position thought unimaginable. Philadelphia is currently 9-19, tied for the worst record in all of baseball alongside the Mets, who are eerily similar to the Phillies. If Philadelphia does not figure it out in the next week or so, it will be almost impossible to capture its third consecutive National League East pennant.
