The Philadelphia Phillies need to make a change after this disappointing start to the 2026 season. Rob Thomson’s job is in jeopardy, and his eventual replacement may have just been let go by the Boston Red Sox. The Phillies need to change after this horrid start to the 2026 season.

Rob Thomson’s Job In Jeopardy

Thomson’s seat is scorching amidst this rough stretch for Philadelphia. The fans are calling for his job and are desperate for change. This could come as soon as Monday, before the Phillies go back home to play the San Francisco Giants.

Thomson has had success managing Philadelphia, leading it to a World Series appearance in his first year as interim manager. The front office has not given him much to work with, lineup-wise, since then, but he seems to be the one paying.

Alex Cora-Phillies Connection

Alex Cora was let go by the Red Sox on Saturday, and the speculation began instantly. He has a history with Dave Dombrowski, who gave him his first opportunity as an MLB manager.

Cora went 620-541 (.534) as the manager in Boston, leading them to a World Series championship in 2018. He is regarded as one of the best managers in the league, and he is not expected to be available very long. A move would be difficult and unprecedented midseason, but Cora may be worth the extended process.

Phillies Early Season Struggles

The Phillies are the worst team in the MLB as April comes to a close. That is not something anyone expected to hear a few months back, even those who disliked the handling of the offseason. They have lost 11 of 12 games and have a record of 9-19 (.321).

Philadelphia simply can’t hit, especially with runners in scoring position. They went through a 22 at-bat drought without getting a hit with RISP. This, combined with the recent pitching struggles, aren’t able to be overcome. Jesus Luzardo has an ERA of 6.91. Cristopher Sanchez is the only pitcher with an ERA under 5.06.

The Phillies suffered a ten-game losing streak over the past few weeks, the longest for the franchise since 1999. If this roster filled with talented players is going to play so poorly, someone needs to be held accountable. Thomson needs to go.

End Of My Alex Cora Phillies Rant

Cora to Philadelphia makes too much sense. It would be difficult to make it happen midseason due to the interview process required by the MLB, but next season is almost likely. Don Mattingly or Dusty Wathan are the internal coaches who make the most sense to take over for Thomson in the interim if he is let go.
