With the 2026 MLB regular season entering its final stretch, the NL playoff race is beginning to take shape. However, there is still plenty to be decided before October arrives.
The Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves have established themselves as the top three division leaders, while the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres are battling for Wild Card positions. With only a little more than a month remaining in the regular season, every series has added importance.
The Brewers currently hold the best record in the National League, while the Dodgers remain one of baseball’s most talented teams despite a recent stretch of inconsistent play. Atlanta has also emerged as one of the league’s strongest clubs after making a significant turnaround from last season.
Meanwhile, the Cubs, Phillies and Padres are fighting for postseason positioning in what could become one of the most competitive Wild Card races in baseball.
The Milwaukee Brewers have been one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 season, but their success is no longer a surprise.
Milwaukee entered Aug. 21 with an 80-49 record, giving the Brewers the best winning percentage in the National League. They have combined consistent pitching with an offense that has continued to produce at critical moments.
The Brewers also recently strengthened their case as the NL’s top team by taking three of four games from the Dodgers. Milwaukee won the season series against Los Angeles, giving the Brewers an important tiebreaker advantage that could become significant when playoff seeding is determined.
Milwaukee’s biggest challenge will be maintaining its advantage over the final weeks of the season. The Brewers have already shown they can compete with the National League’s elite teams, and their combination of young talent and pitching depth makes them a legitimate World Series contender.
The Dodgers remain one of the most dangerous teams in the National League, but their path toward the top seed has become less straightforward.
Los Angeles entered Aug. 21 with a 77-51 record and sits behind Milwaukee in the NL standings. The Dodgers have also endured a difficult last few weeks, losing 11 of their previous 16 games during one recent stretch.
The offense has been a particular concern. Los Angeles averaged 5.3 runs per game earlier in the season but had fallen to 3.8 runs per game since July 8 entering the recent series against Milwaukee.
There is still plenty of talent on the roster, though. Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Max Muncy and the rest of the Dodgers’ lineup give the club tremendous offensive potential, while the addition of Tarik Skubal at the trade deadline gives Los Angeles another potential postseason ace.
The Dodgers also maintain a comfortable lead in the NL West, meaning their primary concern now is improving their position for October rather than simply reaching the postseason.
The Atlanta Braves have experienced one of the most impressive turnarounds in the National League.
After missing the playoffs in 2025, Atlanta has put itself in position to win the NL East in 2026. The Braves entered Aug. 21 with a 75-53 record, placing them third among NL division leaders.
Atlanta’s resurgence has been especially important because the Braves entered the season with questions surrounding their roster and pitching staff. Instead, the club has positioned itself for a postseason run and currently has a substantial advantage over Philadelphia in the NL East.
The Braves’ biggest concern may be whether their rotation can hold up in October. Atlanta was already identified as a team that could benefit from adding another playoff-caliber starting pitcher at the trade deadline.
Still, the Braves have enough talent to be considered a legitimate threat to both Milwaukee and Los Angeles.
The Chicago Cubs have put themselves in an excellent position to return to the postseason.
Chicago entered Aug. 21 with a 74-54 record and was sitting comfortably in the NL Wild Card picture. The Cubs have also remained competitive with Milwaukee in the NL Central, although the Brewers have created separation at the top of the division.
The Cubs have benefited from a strong position-player group and timely contributions throughout the lineup. Pete Crow-Armstrong has provided significant offensive production, while the pitching staff has continued to give Chicago a chance in close games.
Chicago’s postseason hopes are no longer simply about making the playoffs. The Cubs could still make a run at one of the top seeds if they finish the season strongly.
The Philadelphia Phillies have more work to do, but they remain firmly in the postseason conversation.
Philadelphia entered Aug. 21 with a 70-58 record and was positioned among the NL Wild Card teams. The Phillies also remain within striking distance of Atlanta in the NL East, making the final weeks of the division race especially important.
Philadelphia’s schedule could play a major role in determining its postseason fate. The Phillies have several important games remaining against playoff contenders, including Atlanta and Milwaukee.
If Philadelphia can put together another strong run, it could still challenge Atlanta for the division while also strengthening its Wild Card position.
The San Diego Padres are currently in the most precarious position of the six teams discussed.
San Diego entered Aug. 21 with a 68-60 record and was holding a Wild Card position, but the margin for error is shrinking. The Padres are surrounded by several teams still chasing postseason opportunities, meaning a prolonged losing streak could quickly change their situation.
The Padres do have the talent to make noise in October. Fernando Tatis Jr. remains one of baseball’s most dynamic players, and San Diego has already shown an ability to compete against other postseason contenders.
The challenge will be consistency. With the Wild Card race becoming increasingly crowded, the Padres cannot afford to give away winnable games down the stretch.
The 2026 NL playoff race is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent years.
Milwaukee has established itself as the team to beat, while Los Angeles and Atlanta remain dangerous division winners. Behind them, Chicago, Philadelphia and San Diego are fighting for Wild Card positioning.
The final weeks could also bring additional pressure from teams outside the current playoff field. The Cardinals, Diamondbacks and other NL clubs remain close enough to make the Wild Card race even more unpredictable.
For the Brewers, Dodgers and Braves, the goal is to secure the best possible position and earn a first-round bye. For the Cubs, Phillies and Padres, every game could determine whether their season continues into October.
With the postseason approaching, the National League has no shortage of contenders. The question is which team can survive the final stretch and emerge as the conference’s biggest World Series threat.
