WWE “Saturday Night’s Main Event” is this weekend from the Yuengling Center in Tampa, Florida. The World Heavyweight Championship will be on the line, with Jey Uso scheduled to defend it against Logan Paul. The winner will defend the strap against former champion Gunther. Can these two sports entertainers carry a title match, or will the unpleasant booking ring true?
As if booking Uso to tap out Gunther wasn’t terrible enough, the next World Heavyweight Championship opportunity is awarded to a part-time celebrity with 19 total matches, per Cagematch. As ridiculous as the booking is, there will surely be a couple of entertaining high spots, even if there is no basic wrestling on display. Paul has gotten the better of the champion a few times on television, attempting to create the illusion of competition.
The challenger made his name in matches where he gets plenty of rehearsal time for high spots. Booking him into the title match is an embarrassment to actual wrestlers, many of whom put their bodies and souls into the art form. This is not to say their match won’t have any entertainment value, but it’s not championship wrestling. WWE booked Paul to pin AJ Styles, making it difficult to breathe from the force-feeding.
One thing is for sure: There’s no way the title changes hands on Saturday. If Uso doesn’t pin him clean, it’s because of more strange booking. There is a chance of a disqualification or outside interference, but it’s only logical to let the champion get this win. WWE is quickly diminishing the work of talents like Gunther and Seth Rollins, who worked hard to ensure the reputation of a working title is upheld.
This match feels irrelevant and wastes an opportunity that should go to wrestlers. There is also nothing beneficial for Uso in this situation. Fans were critical of the booking over Gunther, and his next opponent is a YouTuber with 11 singles matches.
