Liv Morgan has held the Women’s World Championship since April and has defended it on television exactly once. WWE has dropped the ball with the biggest belt on Raw.
Morgan beat Stephanie Vaquer on Night One of WrestleMania 42 on April 18, winning the championship in a match that ran just under seven minutes. Judgment Day helped, the Codebreaker and ObLivion finished the job, and a third reign began.
The reign then went quiet. Morgan went 119 days without putting the title on the line on television. The only two defenses in that stretch came at house shows in Birmingham and Sheffield on June 21 and 24.
SummerSlam finally produced a real one. Morgan retained against Iyo Sky on Night One in Minneapolis. The win stands as the first and still only televised defense of a reign now approaching four months.
Rather than run a title program alongside the tournament, WWE entered the champion into the tournament designed to produce her challenger. Morgan beat Chelsea Green, Becky Lynch, and Alexa Bliss in Paris to reach the semifinals.
The finish exposed the whole structure. Morgan lost the final to Sky, who then challenged for the championship, meaning the champion spent two months losing a tournament instead of defending the belt she already held.
Only one televised defense in that window is the part worth sitting with. WWE booked its world champion into a bracket, had her lose the final, and then handed the winner a title shot. Establishing that the belt matters less than the tournament is a strange goal for any company.
Vaquer’s injury explains part of the gap. Losing the obvious first challenger a week after WrestleMania forced a rewrite, but a company with this roster should not need four months to find somebody else.
Karmen Petrovic named the champion unprompted when asked who she would target. Speaking on the Battleground podcast, Petrovic said Morgan was the first name off the top of her head. Petrovic added that she “would love to step up” and ask the champion to put the belt on the line.
Petrovic is not a headline act, which is part of the point. A wrestler that far down the card naming the world champion as an obvious target says something about how available that title has looked.
Fans reached the same conclusion faster. Morgan posted a 100-day celebration on social media and got buried in replies pointing out that the reign had produced no defenses at all.
Morgan turned the criticism into character work, claiming on ESPN that everybody was too scared to challenge her. Leaning into it was the correct response from the performer, and it does not fix the underlying booking.
Morgan told ESPN’s SportsCenter that being champion means being “the representative and the martyr of the division,” and that she takes the responsibility seriously. Believe her. The problem has never been the champion.
WWE gave a heel with real heat and a stable behind her the single most defensible title situation in wrestling and then used almost none of it. Judgment Day interference exists precisely so a champion can retain weekly without looking weak. Raw runs three hours every single week. The roster includes Sky, Petrovic, Bayley, Rodriguez, Perez, and a dozen others who would benefit from losing a competitive title match on television.
Two televised defenses in four months is not a reign. Jade Cargill went 104 days before her first defense last year. WWE has now run the same pattern twice with its women’s world championships inside twelve months, which stops looking like circumstance and starts looking like policy. Becky Lynch came back specifically to make sure the champion does not go another 100 days without defending. Making that argument should not have required a returning star to say it out loud.
