Last week, after a steady diet of distasteful booking, Gunther won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship back from Jey Uso. It was as if management was ready to admit the mistake of having the new champion tap to the finisher he uses at WrestleMania, dropping the title back to him less than two months later. The Austrian came to the ring to promote his next storylines. The nostalgia card was pulled just as glimpses of an actual wrestling match peeked through.
Gunther appeared on the most recent episode of Raw to address “Mr. Money in the Bank” Seth Rollins. After explaining he’s not hard to find, it seemed WWE was finally pairing two elite talents in the World Heavyweight Championship picture. The joy of pure wrestling fans was short-lived, as the music of perhaps the most overrated wrestler of all time, Goldberg, hit the airwaves.
Goldberg went face-to-face with the champion, reminding the audience of an incident between the two that had occurred months ago in Atlanta. Never able to give an intriguing promo, he told Gunther, “You’re Next.” A man who never had a technical match in his life is somehow the best choice to pair with one of the best? Even if this is his retirement match, it’s another booking that does nothing for the full-time star.
As the most exciting part of Goldberg is the music and introduction, they need to find a way to make the match intriguing. The random pairing is not interesting enough on its own, and it’s unwise to expect anything spectacular or unique from his retirement match. There is one way to save this.
It’s unlikely that Goldberg will take many bumps, but after Gunther takes a spear and a jackhammer, and Gunther kicks out, it’s time for Rollins to save the wrestling world once again. Both men can sell exhausted while making history, cashing in on a retirement match. This decision also saves both participants from taking a clean loss, protecting their reputations.
If the upcoming match on July 12, 2025, at Saturday Night’s Main Event does not feature a cash-in, it risks becoming another Goldberg blunder. There are only so many moves the challenger has in their repertoire, and only so much time before they botch something, making the champ look bad. After some chops from Gunther and a couple of signature moves from Goldberg, the sound of his music hitting and the sight of running down the ramp with the briefcase will save the day.
Gunther and Rollins need a one-on-one. They are the top two talents, fighting for the championship that they helped elevate to its current status. It’s time to pit talents against each other: no more spot monkeys, commentators, or overrated, aging legends.
