WWE 2K26 is set to be released on March 13, 2026, with the game’s theme based on the iconic Monday Night Wars of the 90s, which helped shape the WWE’s Attitude Era and WCW’s most successful run (and eventual fall) in the company’s history.
The latest addition to the WWE 2K series will bring back a few new matches for gamers to play for this year’s release, with returning matches such as the Inferno Match and the I Quit match.
While my personal favorite is a new match addition, which is the 3 Stages of Hell match. I would love to recreate the 5-star classic match that Stone Cold Steve Austin and Triple H had at No Way Out in 2001. This is a 2 out of 3 falls format where all three matches are of different stipulations and is over once one of the two wrestlers wins 2 of the 3 matches over their opponent.
With the unlikely return of CM Punk to the WWE in 2023 at that year’s Survivor Series, he will be the feature athlete for the WWE Showcase mode, where you can relive his long journey to stardom. Here you will relive the rise of CM Punk from the independent circuit to his success as a 7-time world champion.
WWE 2K series has modeled their system similar to other games in their franchise, such as the popular NBA 2K series, which provides gamers with various modes they can play, which is not technically new to the wrestling games, but WWE 2K has provided its audience with endless creativity in their platform that we have not witnessed in past wrestling games.
All wrestling fans are aware of the importance 1990s wrestling had on popular culture, where we were graced with other athletes or celebrities either fighting or making guest appearances to draw the line in their loyalty between WWE’s Monday Night Raw or WCW’s Monday Night Nitro.
The rising stars of the 80’s helped birth a 90’s resurgence for sports entertainment, and this game will provide a lengthy roster to include Attitude Era stars, WCW stars, where fans can recreate moments in the WWE Universe Mode, while possibly changing the outcome of the winner of the Monday Night War.
We have lost wrestling legends along the way so having the opportunity to hear their music and embody their entrance while they make their way to the ring to fight a heated rival will provide a nostalgic feel that fans will appreciate.
Gamers can also see how current stars of today or the 2000s or 2010s may have measured up against the competition in the 90s and vice versa. Although it feels that the wrestling stars of today are not highlighted enough in the WWE 2K series, there are still modes such as MyFaction that are similar to NBA 2K’s MyTeam, where gamers collect cards of wrestlers throughout various eras after completing goals, helping bridge the gap and fans find out about wrestlers they never knew of.
WWE 2K began with a lukewarm reception from fans because of their loyalty to THQ and the nostalgia we have for “old school” games. Luckily, WWE 2K provides the opportunity for fans of this genre of gaming to play as their favorite 90s wrestling superstar and relive the golden age of wrestling.
