Following a 4-13 record in 2024 not many people expected the incredible turnaround that the New England Patriots showed last season. Improving their record to an impressive 14-3 was mostly brought about by the advanced development of young franchise quarterback Drake Maye. It was a different story once the calendar flipped for the Patriots during the playoffs as a weakened offensive line was exposed and exploited for an NFL record 21 sacks. Maye was under constant duress, especially in the Super Bowl where the Seattle Seahawks exploded for a record-tying six sacks in the Super Bowl. No team is going to win under those conditions.
There has been plenty of chatter this year about the Patriots, and rightfully so. The defending AFC Champions have made some key additions in the offseason, headlined by the notable acquisitions of star wide receivers A.J. Brown (brought over from the Philadelphia Eagles in a blockbuster trade,) and free agent signee Romero Doubs. Brown will immediately slot in as a true elite WR1 for Maye with Doubs playing a key role as a short to mid-range target hog.
Drake Maye now has plenty of weapons at his disposal as he takes the helm for his third year in New England. Rhamondre Stephenson and Treyveon Henderson return to lead the backfield. Along with Brown and Doubs, familiar names like Demario “Pop” Douglas, Mack Hollins, and Kayshon Boutte round out the receiving corps and will be backed up by younger talents such as Kyle Williams and Efton Chism, both of which showed promise in their rookie years. Fifth year holdover tight end Hunter Henry will again be running routes and chipping pass rushers as Maye continues to lead the Patriots offense. This team once again looks poised to put plenty of points on the scoreboard this season.
Despite ranking as the fourth best overall defense in 2025, allowing the fourth fewest points per game with 18.8, just behind Seattle (17.2), Houston (17.4), and Denver (18.3), there is always room for improvement. Dre’mont Jones and Kevin Byard were added to the defensive unit joining familiar names such as Christian Gonzales, Marcus Jones, Christian Barmore, and Milton Williams amongst others. Defensive Coordinator Zac Kuhr will utilize flexible alignments, mainly from the 3-4 scheme to maximize the potential of this unit, increasing the pass rush and pressure rate while also zeroing in on takeaways in the secondary and tightening up the red zone defense, aiming to make them among the best in the league once again.
Despite talk about their current strength of schedule and some speculation about Maye’s progress, there is ample reason for the fans in Foxboro to be excited for 2026 and beyond. The offensive improvements are sure to light up the scoreboard. The defense looks ready to go up against the most prolific teams in the league and keep the game under control rather than putting Maye and company behind the proverbial eight ball while playing from behind. With the right pieces now in place, it comes back to what mattered most at the most critical time last season, protecting the quarterback.
Two of the three losses that the Brady-led Patriots suffered on the game’s grandest stage came down to the same thing that spelled doom for the Patriots in Super Bowl LX, pressure on the QB. Against the Giants in 2008, Brady was under constant pressure resulting in five sacks. The Giants again rattled Brady in 2012 with eight quarterback hits, albeit only resulting in two sacks. In that game however, Brady’s longest pass went for a mere 21 yards due to the relentless pass rush he faced from the Giants front seven. New England knows they must protect young Drake Maye to have a chance at winning the “Big Game” this year.
On paper, the 2026 Patriots offense looks stronger than the one that nearly won the Super Bowl last year for the first time since the Brady-led dynasty days. The defense looks equally improved and impressive with a solid front line, aggressive linebackers, and a secondary that seems capable of stopping the most powerful aerial attacks they will face this year. Alijah Vera-Tucker (free agent), Caleb Lomu (first round draft pick), and a healthy Will Campbell will contribute to an improved offensive line for protecting Maye this year, something the team learned they desperately needed after their season ended in heartbreaking fashion in the final NFL game of the year.
The Patriots now have a well-rounded, much-improved team on both sides of the ball, a well-respected Head Coach amongst his players that knows how to win on the field and on the sidelines, and a young up-and-coming Quarterback that is beginning to find his way in the NFL. All of the pieces are falling into place for New England in 2026 and fans should have plenty to cheer about in the coming months ahead. This team really reminds you of some of the memorable Patriot championship teams of the last 20 years.
