Drake Maye was never a guaranteed winner, and Patriots fans have to stop pretending that he is. The void New England has lived with since Tom Brady left after the 2019 season has been brutal. From 2020 through 2024, the Patriots went a combined 33-51, reached the playoffs only once and failed to win a postseason game. The decline bottomed out with consecutive 4-13 seasons in 2023 and 2024. That was a staggering collapse for a franchise that won six Super Bowls with Brady and entered the playoffs in 17 of his 19 seasons as New England’s primary quarterback.
The rise and fall of the Patriots has been fascinating to watch, but everything appeared to change when New England selected Maye with the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The quarterback’s rookie season offered promise, but the real transformation came in 2025. The Patriots improved from 4-13 to 14-3, won the AFC East and reached Super Bowl LX. Their offense jumped from 30th in scoring in 2024 to second in 2025, while Maye completed 72% of his passes for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns and only eight interceptions.
Maye did not accomplish that with an inexperienced operation around him. Head coach Mike Vrabel entered the job with three Super Bowl rings from his playing career and previous NFL head-coaching experience. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels had already helped New England win six championships during multiple stints under Bill Belichick. The 2025 Patriots also finished second in scoring and fourth in points allowed, meaning Maye benefited from one of the NFL’s most complete teams rather than dragging a broken roster to the Super Bowl by himself.
Then the old Patriots fantasy returned. A young quarterback had arrived ahead of schedule. New England was back in the Super Bowl. Fans could once again convince themselves that the franchise had found not merely a quarterback, but the next winner.
Seattle interrupted that fantasy. The Seahawks defeated New England 29-13 in Super Bowl LX, leaving Maye with an impressive season but no championship. He threw for 295 yards and delivered a 35-yard touchdown, but the Patriots still left the biggest game of the year as decisive losers.
Drake Maye may already be a superstar. The UNC product may even be the Patriots’ long-term franchise quarterback. But is he a franchise-defining winner like Tom Brady was? Maye’s early 2026 training camp has offered little reason to make that leap. The 23-year-old opened camp talking about the need to bring his “A-game,” yet his second practice reportedly included inconsistent accuracy, several high throws and an interception on a pass intended for A.J. Brown. Even Maye acknowledged responsibility for the final mistake of the opening session.
Training camp cannot erase Maye’s 2025 season. What it can do is expose the danger of treating one great year as proof that New England has found another Brady. Maye has already shown that he can produce. The third year quarterback has already shown that he can reach the Super Bowl. What he has not shown is the trait Patriots fans care about most: finishing the season as the winner.
Drake Maye’s second day of training camp exposed a real concern. Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis recorded pass breakups, Milton Williams batted down a pass, and Craig Woodson intercepted a high throw intended for A.J. Brown after Brown could only get his fingertips on it.
That was not all.
Maye’s first pass sailed over Hunter Henry on a crossing route. The veteran later overthrew rookie tight end Eli Raridon on a play-action bootleg while pressure closed in, and his only target to Romeo Doubs was incomplete.
There were still positives. Maye completed a slant to Brown and hit Kayshon Boutte on a back-shoulder throw. The overall pattern was clear: when the defense disrupted his timing, his accuracy became inconsistent.
Plenty of talented quarterbacks have reached a Super Bowl without becoming champions. Dan Marino made it in his second season and never returned. Jim Kelly reached four straight and lost all four. Talent can get a team close, but closing is different.
Maye may have the talent and the team around him, but we still do not know whether he has the killer instinct to finish.
Day Two did not prove he is a failure. It proved he is still vulnerable under pressure.
If Maye wants to become the kind of winner Patriots fans expect, he has to step up.
