The Buffalo Bills will likely need help improving their run defense through the 2025 NFL Draft. The team has limited cap space and has already signed all but one core player during free agency.
The draft boasts some top-name defensive tackle prospects, including two players who are linked to the Bills’ draft board.
Here are the two prospects to listen for, who would fit the Bills’ scheme to shut down ball carriers in the backfield.
1. Kenneth Grant- Michigan Wolverines
At 6’3, 331 lbs, Grant is an athletic and strong monster of a human being. The big-bodied athlete was a huge factor in helping the Michigan Wolverines win the 2024 CFP National Championship game over the Washington Huskies.
Last year, Grant had an All-American season, totaling 32 combined tackles and 3.0 sacks in only 12 games played.
The NFL is a 17-game season, and the talented run stuffer is going to have to adjust to the grind once entering the league as a rookie. Grant is still durable enough to be a starting-caliber DT in the NFL for years to come.
Grant has the ability to help out the Bills’ defense by clogging up the lanes and stopping the running backs in their tracks.
The Bills would be very lucky to draft a Sam Adams 2.0-like player. He is a large human with rare speed, running a 4.8 40-yard dash at the NFL combine at 331 lbs.
The big defensive tackle plays with determination and speed while flooding his competitors. It’s hard to knock him out of position as he can challenge and hamper double teams.
Grant has the athleticism and talent to succeed. It’s about keeping himself in shape and out of injury trouble during a 17-game season annually.
2. Derrick Harmon- Oregon Ducks
Harmon looks to be the ideal fit for the Bills, given the team’s draft position and the type of defensive tackle needed to play in a 4-3 scheme.
The 6’4″, 313 lb. athlete plays much bigger than his weight would indicate. He sports a gigantic wingspan of 83 3/4 inches and ran a 4.95 40-yard dash at the NFL combine. Harmon fits the Bills’ scheme better than Grant because he is more versatile and able to stop the run in Buffalo.
The evolving defensive tackle works hard on strategy and technique. It helps him become a better run-stopping d-lineman.
Harmon would be a good fit for the defense and work well with Ed Oliver, by being able to play both sides of the interior defensive line. Grant is more of a pure nose tackle for a 3-4 scheme.
In 2024, after playing at Michigan State, Harmon transferred to fellow Big 10 member Oregon as a one-year player. The transfer combined for 45 tackles and 5.0 sacks, which were better statistics than Grant had at Michigan last year.
In a 17-game season like the NFL brings Harmon fairs better than Grant due to durability, stats, analytics, and production in college.
Both prospects will be excellent in the NFL. All signs point to the Buffalo Bills drafting Harmon due to the team picking at 30 and the possibility of Grant going off the board before then.
