On July 27, 2026, the NFL world was in shock as news of the Vita Vea trade request spread across social media like wildfire. While he put in a request, there are no guarantees the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are going to trade the defensive tackle. If they do listen to trade offers, the Chicago Bears should be at the front of the line. Here is why trading for Vea makes perfect sense.
Adding a player like Vea would instantly boost a beleaguered Bears run defense. Chicago ranked in the bottom ten for run defense, giving up an average of 134.5 rushing yards per game and 5.0 yards per attempt. The defense also allowed 15 rushing touchdowns, adding to the team’s concerns heading into the 2026 season.
The anchor of the Buccaneers’ defensive line, they ranked fifth in the league in defending against the run. During the 2025 season, Tampa Bay gave up only 99.1 rushing yards per game and 4.2 yards per carry. Being a dominant rush defense has been a trend since the Buccaneers drafted Vea, with six of his eight seasons being ranked in the top five.
Should he end up on the Bears, Vea would line up as the 1-tech nose tackle in the 4-3 defensive alignment. As a 1-tech, his role on the defensive line would be a heavy run-stuffer and gap-anchor, something sorely needed on Chicago’s roster. Having Vea as the 1-tech would allow Grady Jarrett and German Dexter Sr. to rotate as 3-tech defensive tackles, focusing on pass-rushing and playing the B-gap.

Adding Vea would instantly change their rush defense weakness to a strength, allowing coaches to focus elsewhere on the team. His addition to the team aligns with the win-now mentality instilled by head coach Ben Johnson.
The addition of Vea would also work perfectly for the Bears now because they are still on a rookie contract with quarterback Caleb Williams. Before having to pay a big contract to the third-year quarterback, Chicago has some flexibility to add proven talent to make a Super Bowl run. The allure of playing for a playoff team could also give the Bears an edge while trading for Vea, as at his age, he will most likely want to end up on another contending team.
Should the Bears inquire about the Vita Vea trade request, it would likely be costly both to acquire him and to pay him. Looking at what it would cost to trade for the defensive tackle would likely require a day-two draft pick. While a third-round pick could be the initial asking price, if multiple teams are bidding, it would likely escalate to a second. Chicago General Manager Ryan Poles has been aggressive in the past, trading early-round picks for players like Chase Claypool and DJ Moore.
As 2026 is the final year of Vea’s current contract, the root of his trade request, he is looking for a new deal. Currently, he is on track to earn $18 million this season, but will likely require a new contract from any team looking to acquire the All-Pro. An estimated new contract would likely be in the three-year, $81 million range with $45-55 million guaranteed. While Chicago has around $8.2 million in current cap space, they would need to create space with restructures to take on a contract of that magnitude.
