Venus Williams’ Citi Open Loss Raises The Question She Cannot Avoid
Venus Williams was just defeated by Anastasia Potapova in the opening round of the 2026 Mubadala DC Open. The match lasted only 1 hour and 15 minutes and gave Potapova her first main-draw victory in Washington.
Williams entered the tournament through a wild card and faced Potapova on the hard court in the Round of 32 at the WTA 500 event. Williams lost 6-3, 6-3, raising a question that can no longer be ignored: Is Venus Williams still physically capable of competing at this level?
Let’s Take A Look At The Statistics
Williams was unable to earn a single break-point opportunity during the match, while Potapova broke her three times.
Potapova won 64 of the match’s 109 total points. Williams’ most significant issue was her second serve, as she won only seven of 29 second-serve points.
Those numbers show that Williams could still compete when she controlled the point early, but once Potapova attacked her second serve or forced her to move, the difference between the two players became much clearer.
Her 2025 Return
However, Venus Williams is no chump.
After returning from a 16-month absence in 2025, she defeated Peyton Stearns 6-3, 6-4. At 45, Williams became the oldest woman to win a tour-level singles match since Martina Navratilova in 2004.
That victory showed that Williams could still defeat an active WTA player. Her ball-striking ability, experience and first serve were still good enough to win matches.
But one victory does not account for the wear and tear that comes with playing professional tennis at her age.
Statistics Do Not Show Wear And Tear

Williams is a phenomenal tennis player. Alongside her sister Serena Williams, she helped revolutionize the sport for young Black girls and opened doors for players such as Sloane Stephens, Madison Keys and Coco Gauff.
Their influence changed what was possible in a sport where players who looked like them had rarely been given the same visibility or opportunities.
But Venus Williams is now 46 years old, while Potapova is 25. That is a 21-year age difference.
Potapova is also an accomplished player. She has won multiple WTA singles titles, reached the top 25 of the world rankings and won the Wimbledon junior championship in 2016.
At Williams’ age, movement naturally begins to slow down. A player can maintain her ball-striking ability, but she cannot perform at the same physical level forever.
Throughout the match, Williams still displayed flashes of the shot-making ability that once made her one of the most dominant players in the sport. The problem was that her movement was no longer enough to keep up consistently with a player 21 years younger than her.

End Of My Venus Williams Rant
Venus Williams is not technically impaired when it comes to her playing ability. Her understanding of the game, her ball-striking and her experience are still present.
What is holding her back most is simply the age at which she is attempting to compete.
It hurts fans to watch a once-dominant champion lose to players who, had they faced Williams during her prime, may not have been serious competition for her.
There is no shame in aging, and there is no shame in losing to a younger professional player. But there comes a point when continuing to compete can begin to change how people remember the final chapter of a legendary career.
