2025 has been another disastrous season for the Pittsburgh Pirates. It’s hard to disappoint Pirates fans, but Bob Nutting and General Manager Ben Cherington find new ways to drive the city of Pittsburgh to the brink of insanity. It has been a terrible decade for Pirates fans, and somehow, it has never felt bleaker than it does currently. The pain and suffering never end for baseball fans in the Steel City.

The Pirates Butcher Another Trade Deadline

Pittsburgh fumbled the 2025 trade deadline. Every time it seems they can’t mess up more, they do it. It’s embarrassing that Cherington was in control for the 2025 deadline. The guy is lost, and he doesn’t have a map. He doesn’t deserve to have his job anymore. In year six of his tenure, things are worse than ever. It didn’t seem possible, but Cherington has done it.

The 2025 trade deadline is the latest monstrosity for Pittsburgh. They traded away Ke’Bryan Hayes, David Bednar, Caleb Ferguson, and Bailey Falter. Nothing of importance came back to them in return. Bednar fetched Rafael Flores, a catcher in the New York Yankees system. Hayes landed Sammy Stafura, an infielder from the Cincinnati Reds system, but the Pirates left meat on the bone. Cherington can feel the walls closing in on him, and he’s breaking everything in sight on his way out.

Cherington has nothing to hang his hat on through six years as the GM. The only good trade he made was acquiring Bailey Falter for Rodolfo Castro. He erased that at the 2025 deadline by trading Falter for a bag of chips. It has been an embarrassing six seasons for Cherington. He hasn’t supplied one glimmer of hope. Fans need to put the pressure on. Get those chants rolling. It’s time to call for heads to roll in Pittsburgh.

The Cherington Era

Cherington’s Pirates tenure has been a disaster of biblical proportions. Hiring him in 2019 set the franchise back a decade, if not more. From 2020 to 2024, Pittsburgh’s record was 294-414 under his oversight. That doesn’t factor in the atrocity that 2025 has been. His lasting legacy will be Paul Skenes falling into his lap. He’s ruined that. The Pirates won’t sniff the playoffs while he’s here.

Pittsburgh needed to add bats last offseason. Cherington signed Adam Frazier and Tommy Pham before lying down for his offseason nap. They could have had Jazz Chisholm last year at the trade deadline. Instead, they landed Bryan De La Cruz. He’s not on the team anymore. Get this jagoff out of here. He is wasting a generational pitcher and a beautiful ballpark. They should hand out paper bags at games.

End Of My Pittsburgh Pirates Rant

Nothing will change in Pittsburgh until Nutting dies or sells the team, but that isn’t happening anytime soon. Dumping Cherington would be a step in the right direction. Former GM Neal Huntington was terrible, but he looks like a saint compared to Cherington. Huntington built a couple of rosters that sniffed the postseason. Cherington can’t say the same. Pirates fans have the saddest existence of any sports fans in North America. There’s no light at the end of the tunnel. Enjoy what is left of Skenes in the Steel City because it isn’t long.
