The Premier League has had some games full of goals. When the top teams come up against those in and around the relegation zone, there can also be some big victories. Man Utd, Chelsea, Tottenham, Leceister, and co have racked up some of the largest match victories in Premier League history. These are a few of the record victory margins in the Premiership.
Manchester Utd vs Ipswich Town: 1995
In 1995, Ipswich visited Old Trafford. Ipswich was a team soon to be relegated a long way below Utd in the league. This game was effectively over by halftime as Utd established a three-goal lead before the break. In the second half, a glut of goals would follow, especially from Cole. Cole notched up five in this game in a nine-goal thrashing that remains a record today. The game ended 9-0, which has remained a record victory other Premiership teams have equaled but never eclipsed.
Southampton vs Leceister: 2019
Leceister amassed the biggest away win in Premier League history in this match. A rampant Leicester City were 5-0 up at halftime, with goals from Chilwell, Vardy, Perez, and Tielemans. Things only got worse and worse for Southampton as the Foxes scored four more in the second to make the final score Southampton 0 Leceister 9.
Tottenham vs Wigan: 2009
Tottenham also racked up nine goals in a 2009 Premiership match against Wigan. Then Defoe netted five goals in the match, and with a couple of late goals, they ended the game with nine goals on the scoreboard. As Wigan scored once after halftime to make the score 9-1, Spurs did not equal Man Utd’s record.
Newcastle vs Sheffield Wednesday: 1999
Shearer had a great game in this fixture with Sheffield Wednesday. Five goals from the Premier League’s record goal scorer left the Owls somewhat ‘hootless.’ Three further goals were also netted by the team as they routed relegation-bound Wednesday 8-0.
Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge Victories
Chelsea have also thrashed numerous teams at the Bridge. Most notably Aston Villa and Wigan Athletic. Wigan were first thrashed 8-0 at Stamford Bridge in 2010 after one of their players was sent off in the first half. A couple of penalties and a Drogba hat-trick inflated Chelsea’s victory. A wobbly Aston Villa team made the trip to Chelsea in 2012 and were beaten by the same scoreline. Then, eight of Chelsea’s 10 outfield players scored the goals.
End of My Largest Match Victories in Premier League History Rant
These are the largest match victories in the Premier League history. There have been four 9-0 scorelines and six 8-0 thrashings in the Premiership. To date, no team has yet to reach the golden 10-0 mark, but that could happen one day.
