For most of the last thirty years, the American League has been considered the powerhouse of the baseball world, mainly thanks to its dominant teams in the AL East. The offenses were especially electric, with teams like the “Bronx Bombers” and the Boston Red Sox earning the reputation of an actual murderers’ row. Many of the teams had money and were willing to spend it; even the teams that did not have drafted fairly well.

Times have certainly changed. The National League has now become the true power house league, and 2025 is no exception. It is not just the high-budget teams, like the Los Angeles Dodgers or New York Mets, either. The top 5 teams in the power rankings are all from the National League, and arguably 6 or 7 of the top 8, depending on who you ask.

The American League, meanwhile, has been thoroughly mediocre. While the NL has a stars and scrubs type of system, the AL seems to have nearly all of its teams bunched up in the middle of the pack. Even the mostly rebuilding teams hover somewhere around .500, unless that team is the dreadful Chicago White Sox. One team will have to win the league, though, so who are the front-runners most likely to be best in the American League this year?

The American League Central May Finally Have A Dominant Young Force

It can be hard to buy into anything that the American League Central is selling. The division tends to fall flat in the playoffs, even if the team appears to be built for dominating a series. This had led many analysts to consistently name the AL Central as the worst division in the league. Whether fair or not, it is hard not to see the logic, as the division has won just two championships in the last thirty years.

This year, though, the American League Central has a team that surprised last year and is proving to be a very tough out this year. The Detroit Tigers sit atop the division at 18-11, good for the best record in the entire AL. They have done so through solid, above-average offense and one of the best pitching staffs, by actual performance, in the entire league.

The pitching staff is not just one of the best in the American League right now, but one of the best in all of MLB. A 2.86 ERA has Detroit ranked third overall, although their xFIP and SIERA indicate the staff is more around 10th in the league. Tarik Skubal, Jack Falherty, Reese Olsen, Casey Mize, and Jackson Jobe make up one of the most talented young rotations in the league. While the team may regress a bit as a whole, the rotation is still skilled enough and young enough to carry the team for many seasons to come.

The offense has been less successful in comparison, but it more than holds its own, especially in the American League Central. The position player side of the coin sits seventh in fWAR and seventh in wRC+, indicating the offense is pretty well above average thus far, despite a middling SLG and the 4th highest strikeout rate in the league. Spencer Torkelson, Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter, and Jace Jung lead the youth movement on offense, but getting production from Javier Baez and Gleyber Torres has helped stabilize the team as well.

Right now, it appears the Detroit Tigers are the best in the American League. Can they stay that way all season, or will they start to regress towards the mean and open the door for other teams? The Tigers do have flaws, both on offense and defense, especially, and a pitching staff that does not strike out many batters. They overperformed last year, and they appear on track to make even more noise this season, but time will tell if they can keep up with the powers of the National League.

The Best Of The Rest In The American League

There are not a ton of other teams in the American League right now that have established themselves as true contenders. Some have decent records, but they are also heavily flawed. The Houston Astros took a step back last year and appear to be flawed again this year, though you can never count them out. The Red Sox should be competing on paper in a wide-open American League East, but they have been inconsistent to start the year.

Realistically, there are two teams based on their performance thus far that could be predicted to compete with the Detroit Tigers to win the American League Pennant. At the top of the list are the defending World Series representative for the AL, the New York Yankees. Far and away, the Yankees’ greatest strength is their offense. They sit number one in offensive player fWAR, wRC+, and SLG percentage. The pitching and defense are struggling, with injuries and ineffectiveness hurting the team. At 17-12, they sit atop the AL East, but are not set up for a sustained run.

The Seattle Mariners, meanwhile, have been a bit of an enigma for a while. Boasting arguably the best starting rotation not just in the American League, or even the majors, but possibly of the entire modern era is nothing to scoff at. Even with George Kirby and Logan Gilbert hurt, their rotation is still among the best in the league. What has always been the issue in the past, though, is the Mariners’ offense. This season, they sit second in wRC+, behind only the Yankees, and driven by a surprising power surge. If this trend continues, the Mariners will become a scary force, but the jury is still out for now.

Outside of the few teams listed above, there are no other teams that have an argument to be made as legitimate contenders right now. The Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, and Texas Rangers all have an outside chance if they can turn their seasons around. Still, right now, they can not be seriously part of the conversation. The remainder of the teams are either in a complete rebuild or drastically underperforming.

End Of My American League Rant

The hard truth of the matter is that the American League is not as good as the National League in terms of top-tier talent this year. They do not currently boast a team that can match up with any of the top five National League teams, like the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, New York Mets, or Chicago Cubs.

The Detroit Tigers may have the best chance, though their numbers suggest a potential regression. All of the teams have flaws, so the question is who can fill their holes the fastest and capitalize when their opponents are struggling? That will be the key to making it out of the American League. As it stands now, the National League is primed to win the World Series, and until the AL can break through its current mediocrity, they do not stand to put up much of a fight.
