Day four at the SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament had top 10 matchups in both Semifinals.
South Carolina dominated Oklahoma 93-75 in the tournament semifinals yesterday. Joyce Edwards led the Gamecocks with 21 points, while MiLaysia Fulwiley added 19 points. Sania Feagin also had a strong game, contributing 14 points.
The Gamecocks’ smothering defense set the tone early, forcing Oklahoma into hurried and bad shots, and committing five turnovers in the first quarter. South Carolina took advantage of this, racing to a 23-15 lead by the end of the first quarter. They stretched their lead to 45-28 at halftime and maintained control throughout the second half.
Oklahoma’s Sahara Williams led the Sooners with 17 points, while Payton Verhulst added 15 points and nine assists. However, the Sooners struggled to keep up with South Carolina’s pace, and their fatigue showed, playing their third game in three days.
With this win, South Carolina advances to the SEC Tournament championship game, where they’ll face Texas today at 3 p.m. ET.
Texas secured a spot in the SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament championship game with a 56-49 win over LSU in the semifinals yesterday. Madison Booker led the Longhorns with 25 points, while Rori Harmon added 10 points and recorded her 700th career assist. Texas’ defense held LSU to under 35% shooting from the field, and the Longhorns’ free-throw shooting proved crucial, with an 85% success rate compared to LSU’s 52.9%.
LSU already playing without Flau’jae Johnson, out with shin inflammation, early in the third quarter lost Aneesah Morrow. She had to be helped off the court not putting any weight on her ankle. Morrow dominated the game against Florida in the quarterfinals.
The game was a defensive battle, with both teams struggling to find their rhythm. However, Texas managed to maintain a lead throughout, thanks in part to Booker’s strong performance. The Longhorns will now face South Carolina in the championship game today at 3 p.m. ET, looking to claim their first SEC Tournament title.
The stage is set for a thrilling matchup between South Carolina and Texas at the SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament today. No coin flip is needed to determine the top seed. After splitting the season series at home and both finishing 15-1 in conference, the number one seed for the conference tournament was determined by a coin flip.
The Longhorns’ victory marked their 15th consecutive win, setting up a thrilling championship showdown with South Carolina. As the two teams face off today, South Carolina will be looking to capitalize with their dominant offensive. With their talented depth the Gamecocks are poised to give Texas a run for their money. On the other hand, Texas will rely on Booker’s scoring prowess and their stingy defense to try and contain South Carolina’s high-powered offense.
