WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event was a huge success. With every wrestler putting in maximum effort and a compressed card, this event was exciting from start to finish. Below are all the matches, with their overall rating and breakdown.
This match over-delivered, and it may have been the best match in Nia Jax’s career. It was a very physical matchup, highlighted by great reversals and acts of strength. This was the perfect way to kick off Saturday Night’s Main Event.
This match started with a violent headbutt from Jax during the introduction and did not ease up. Both women maintained a fast pace, and the striking looked stiff. There was a general sense of anger throughout, with genuine intensity written on their faces.
Ripley and Jax both had moments to shine in this category. Ripley showed off her athleticism in moments such as hitting a Code Red or the Riptide that got her the victory. Jax also had the match of her career, keeping up the pace and executing numerous smooth reversals.
There has been some TV interaction between the two, but they haven’t been each other’s main story. Ripley is just finishing up with The Judgment Day, while Jax just dropped the title to Tiffany Stratton. The match had a good story, with Jax opening strong and dominant and Ripley performing feats of strength to mount a babyface comeback.
Nia Jax was showing off the smoothest reversals in her career while maintaining a high pace for an extended period of time. Jax especially shined with some Samoan Drop reversals and a pop-up headbutt. The same evaluation could be used for Ripley, showing out with a crossbody from the top rope to the floor and many acts of strength. Both women had multiple believable false finishes.
Sheamus and Bron Breakker delivered a high-pace, stiff match with nice reversals each way.
Neither of these men ever lacks intensity; they let each other have it in this one. Sheamus almost caved his chest in over the ropes. Slow moments were hard to come by in this stiff contest.
Both big men took to the top rope in this one, and cardio did not seem an issue. Breakker’s speed and power were on display, while Sheamus moved around the ring with the big man over his head before dropping him for a Celtic Cross (spin on Razor’s Edge).
These two have been putting on great matches and interacting backstage on TV. WWE has also done a good job teasing the fact this is the belt Sheamus needs to complete the grand slam. The match also had good storytelling, the finish being one of the noteworthy moments. Sheamus reversed a spear into a Brogue Kick, leading to a tense false finish, broken up by toes on the rope. Breakker then battled back, reversing into the spear for the victory.
Nonstop action and great reversals. The match did lack technical wrestling or chain grappling.
While this match was thrown out, it certainly elevated the status of Jacob Fatu. Braun Strowman has had great backstage segments and matches, gaining respect from fans of the hardcore style for him and his opponents.
Jacob Fatu started with an intense promo before coming out, and it didn’t stop there. With shoulder tackles over the announce table and a Samoan Drop reversal through the table, this match was off to the races early. It got out of hand, so the referee called it off. Jacob Fatu would not be finished, however, and would attack Strowman’s lifeless body in the corner repeatedly, showing no mercy.
It would take two men of this size and athleticism to put on a match like this. The ability to maintain pace, with the strength to slam the other, all elevated this match.
There isn’t a deep history here other than fighting over who the scarier monster is. They may be slow playing this story. There is more to come without an official winner and Fatu brutalizing Strowman after the match.
This match was more about elevating Jacob Fatu than putting on a clinic. They had a smooth flow with a couple of nice reversals.
While there was nothing wrong with the match, both men have had better. It finished with two vicious powerbombs to Jey Uso. It lacked some of the Walter chops and dominance or pace and spots of an Uso match.
Jey Uso showed some athleticism off the top rope, and Walter showed off his strength. Both have shown more in the past.
Walter did a great job building this match, using witty and personal promos. Jey Uso has also been trying to solidify himself as a solo star. The finish was a nice story, with the second spear being reversed into two power bombs.
Overall, it had a pleasing flow and timely reversals. They had the best false finishes of the night.
Saturday Night’s Main Event also had Shawn Michaels moderating a contract signing between Kevin Owens and Cody Rhodes. Michaels was set up for a package piledriver when Rhodes would come to the rescue, leaving Owens on his back. Royal Rumble is just around the corner, and the action is heating up. Overall, I would give the event a 4.25/5.
