Premier League Matchday 1 delivered shock results, statement wins, late drama and several intriguing managerial debuts as the 2026/27 season got underway. Reigning champions Arsenal opened their title defence with a comfortable victory, newly promoted Hull City stunned Manchester United, and Manchester City needed a stoppage-time winner to beat Bournemouth.
The opening round ended with Chelsea beginning Xabi Alonso’s reign with a thrilling 3-2 win at Fulham.
Chelsea began Xabi Alonso’s tenure with an entertaining 3-2 win at Fulham, and the new manager immediately saw the potential of his attacking trio.
João Pedro scored inside the opening minute, Morgan Rogers added a second and Cole Palmer completed the scoring for Chelsea. Palmer was particularly influential, contributing directly to Chelsea’s attacking moves throughout the game.
The defensive side of the performance was less convincing. Robert Sánchez was at fault for both Fulham goals, while the hosts created enough pressure to make Chelsea uncomfortable late in the match.
Enzo Fernández was also booed by Fulham supporters when he came on as a substitute amid transfer speculation linking him with Manchester City.
For Alonso, the opening victory offered an encouraging glimpse of Chelsea’s attacking potential while also highlighting an area that still needs work.
Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat at newly promoted Hull City was one of Matchday 1’s biggest shocks.
Semi Ajayi and debutant Nobel Mendy scored as Hull punished United’s defensive weaknesses. Despite enjoying possession, Michael Carrick’s side struggled to create enough clear opportunities to get back into the game.
Marcus Rashford returned to the Manchester United squad and came off the bench, but he could not inspire a comeback.
The defeat does not define United’s season. It immediately gives Carrick problems to solve and strengthens the argument that the club may need further reinforcements before the transfer window closes.
Manchester City’s new era under Enzo Maresca began with a dramatic 2-1 comeback against Bournemouth.
Maresca made several unexpected tactical decisions, including using centre-back Marc Guéhi in central midfield and Nico O’Reilly in a No. 10 role. City also fielded their youngest Matchweek 1 starting XI in 17 years.
Bournemouth took the lead through Marcus Tavernier and looked capable of producing a major upset. Substitute Rayan Cherki changed the game, providing the assists for Guéhi’s equaliser and Joško Gvardiol’s stoppage-time winner.
It was far from a routine City victory, but Maresca will take encouragement from his team’s ability to recover from a difficult position and find a way to win.
Brighton’s 4-0 demolition of Aston Villa was the largest victory of Matchday 1.
Jack Hinshelwood scored twice in just 79 seconds as Brighton raced into a four-goal lead inside the opening 31 minutes. Maxim De Cuyper added another before an own goal from Victor Lindelöf completed the scoring.
Villa’s afternoon became even more difficult when João Gomes was sent off before half-time. Brighton also became only the fourth team in Premier League history to score four first-half goals on Matchweek 1, joining Bolton Wanderers, Manchester United and Liverpool.
Hull City stunned Manchester United 2-0, while Ipswich Town defeated Sunderland 2-1 thanks to Jack Clarke’s late winner.
Coventry City, the third promoted side, lost 3-0 to defending champions Arsenal.
The opening weekend therefore provided an encouraging start for two of the three promoted clubs, with Hull’s victory over Manchester United standing out as one of the round’s biggest surprises.

Arsenal could hardly have asked for a better beginning to their title defence, while Brighton immediately established themselves as the weekend’s biggest winners with a four-goal demolition of Aston Villa.
Manchester United, meanwhile, have already been given an early warning that last season’s progress under Michael Carrick does not guarantee a smooth campaign. Hull exposed problems that Carrick will need to address quickly.
Manchester City also showed both sides of their new era. Maresca’s tactical experimentation produced some unusual selections, but City’s substitutes ultimately provided the quality needed to turn a potential defeat into victory.
Liverpool’s late penalty at Newcastle showed the resilience Andoni Iraola will want from his new side. Newcastle’s performance suggested Matthias Jaissle’s team can compete despite a difficult summer.
At Craven Cottage, Chelsea produced perhaps the clearest example of a team that can be exciting and vulnerable at the same time.
Alonso’s attack already looks capable of causing serious problems, but the defensive issues will need to be addressed if Chelsea are to challenge near the top of the table.
