Enzo Fernández to Man City would be one of the most uncomfortable transfers Chelsea could sanction this summer. The Argentine midfielder remains on City’s radar as Enzo Maresca, his old Chelsea manager, plans for possible changes in midfield. Chelsea reportedly values Fernandez at around £120 million.
Chelsea has one major reason to keep him away from the Etihad. Selling Fernández would hand a direct Premier League rival a player who already knows exactly how to win the title.
Where things actually stand: City is weighing Fernández up alongside a separate pursuit of Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi. Rodri’s future is uncertain amid reported Barcelona interest.
Reporting on how seriously City is pursuing Fernández has varied — some sources describe Maresca as personally driving the move.
Other sources suggest City is reluctant to match Chelsea’s £120 million valuation while funding the Bouaddi deal. No agreement is close, and Chelsea is not currently looking to sell.
City’s interest makes sense even if Fernández isn’t a like-for-like replacement for Rodri. His uncertain future has opened up a midfield vacancy, and Maresca knows exactly what Fernández offers because he coached him at Chelsea.
City has already spent big on Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest this summer. It is working on a separate deal for teenage Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, but he and Fernández aren’t really direct alternatives to each other
Bouaddi is an 18-year-old prospect. Fernandez is a proven Premier League performer who can progress the ball under pressure, dictate a game’s tempo, and contribute goals and assists from central midfield right now.
Fernandez isn’t the same player Chelsea signed from Benfica for a British-record £106.8 million in January 2023. He has since captained the side and become a fixture in Chelsea’s midfield. He also won the World Cup with Argentina in 2022 before featuring for his country again at the 2026 tournament.
Enzo is no longer a promising signing, still finding his level in the Premier League. He’s an established, proven top-level midfielder that a rebuilding Chelsea side under Xabi Alonso can ill afford to lose from its spine.
This is where Chelsea’s decision gets uncomfortable. Picture Fernández lining up against it twice a season in a City shirt: controlling midfield and creating chances for their forwards.
The midfielder would also help City dominate possession and potentially develop into Rodri’s long-term successor at the base of their engine room.
Chelsea selling a good player to a mid-table club is one thing. Selling a proven, title-winning-caliber midfielder to one of Chelsea’s biggest Premier League rivals, managed by the coach who knows him best, is a very different calculation.
£120 million is a significant fee, and Chelsea has shown under their current ownership that they’re willing to cash in on players when the numbers work.
The real question is what Chelsea would do with the money. Replacing a midfielder of Fernández’s level costs money too. Reports already suggest City isn’t willing to meet Chelsea’s full £120 million asking price while they’re simultaneously funding a deal for Bouaddi.
If Chelsea ends up reinvesting £80-100 million of that fee into a replacement who needs time to adapt to the Premier League, the net gain from selling shrinks fast. The cost of facing a better version of Fernández twice a year would also factor in.
There’s also a less comfortable possibility for Chelsea: City’s environment could get more out of Fernández than Chelsea currently does. He would play under Maresca again and inside a possession-dominant system built to keep the ball and control games. That could suit Fernandez’s passing range and game intelligence even better than his current role does.
Chelsea wouldn’t just be losing Fernández as he is now — they could be handing a rival the tools to make him better.

City isn’t short of alternatives. It is already working on a deal for Bouaddi and has Anderson in place as a fresh midfield addition. This isn’t a case of Chelsea holding the only midfielder capable of solving City’s problem.
Ral Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have also been credited with interest in Fernández, giving Chelsea leverage even if they do eventually consider a sale.
It’s also worth noting City’s interest hasn’t been entirely consistent. Earlier reporting suggested Fernández wasn’t a priority for them at all, with Anderson viewed as the bigger target, before more recent reports put him firmly back in the frame.
The inconsistency is itself a reason for Chelsea not to rush into anything. Manchester City have other options. Chelsea doesn’t have to hand them the best one.
