Lions Cornerback Jerry Jacobs Cleared To Practice Next Week

Jerry Jacobs was an undrafted free agent for Detroit last year who played extremely well last season, taking the place of the injured Jeff Okudah. Jacobs played like a lockdown corner in his time, but had an ACL injury late in the season, and is close to being done recovering. Now that he’ll be back the big question is, what kind of a role will he play with this new and improved Lions roster? Let’s breakdown what his role will likely be and what this means for the team.

What Will His Role Be With The Lions?

Jerry Jacobs, in the time he played last season, was a lockdown number two corner alongside Amani Oruwariye. He was the highest-graded undrafted free agent by PFF last season and was consistently one of Detroit’s highest-graded defenders each week. With that being said the Lions’ secondary is greatly improved from the last time Jacobs was on the field. Since his injury, the Lions have added guys like Mike Hughes and Chase Lucas and got Jeff Okudah back.

Jacobs is on track to come back at the perfect time, after the bye week the Lions should have him, DeAndre Swift, and Jameson Williams back. If Amani Oruwariye doesn’t bounce back in the next two weeks, it is very likely that Jacobs could take his spot as the other starting outside corner alongside Jeff Okudah. As long as Jerry Jacobs doesn’t take too much of a step back from last year due to his injury, he can be a quality starter in this league.

One of Jacobs’ best qualities is his love for the game of football. Jacobs has been dying to get back on the field and put in work. This is another great reason to want to keep him on this team, there are not a lot of players that want to play in Detroit. If the Lions can keep him around he could be one of the biggest cornerstones to making this team into a champion.
