Jets' RB Breece Hall Falls Short Of NFL Standards

The NFL will hand out some of its most prestigious accolades tonight at the annual NFL Honors Awards ceremony. The Offensive/Defensive Player of the Year awards and the league’s MVP will headline the show, however, the finalists for Comeback Player of the Year do not even include a player who you could argue is the clear favorite.

Breece Bounced Back

Since tearing his ACL in Week 7 of his rookie season, Hall has bounced back in a major way. New York’s second-year back was six yards shy of a 1,000-yard rushing season, accumulated 591 receiving yards on 76 receptions, and scored 11 touchdowns this year. Totaling over 1,500 yards in 2023, Breece Hall finally got the chance to show what kind of running back he could be when healthy.

The Jets' offense as a whole had a season to forget, but despite the failure, Hall still managed to produce in a way that resulted in him being compared to one of the league's best.

That’s some good company for Breece Hall to be in and something he should be proud of, but unfortunately, the NFL had other ideas.

Another Jets Snub

After witnessing All-Pro LB Quincy Williams get snubbed from the Pro Bowl this year, Jets fans now have to endure the fact that Breece Hall’s name won’t even get mentioned as a nominee tonight.

That's fine if there were other players more deserving of the award, however, Hall is arguably a better option than more than half of those on the list. Joe Flacco, off of the couch, had an impressive stretch with the Browns, but it was only a few games. Damar Hamlin accomplished so much to get back on the field, but he only played 1.59% of the defensive snaps this season. Lastly, Baker Mayfield had himself a great season with the Bucs, but what exactly did he “come back” from?

These awards, along with the Pro Bowl, seem to becoming more and more of a popularity contest each year. I mean what more does Hall have to do to be considered, he fits all of the criteria. Needless to say, I’m sure Breece will use this as a chip on his shoulder heading into 2024 in what hopes to be a better Jets offense.
