Portugal vs. Spain, July 6, 2026 preview – The Round of 16 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 is here, and it’s do-or-die in the Knockout Stage. One game in particular has arguably the most combined talent on the field. Two powerhouses of the soccer world clash on Monday at 4:00 pm Eastern from the Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Portugal

Portugal has lacked the expected firepower and dominance throughout the tournament, but advanced nonetheless. The Portuguese finished second in Group K, behind Colombia, but ahead of DR Congo and Uzbekistan.

Outside of a game against the massively underpowered Uzbekistan team, Portugal had two draws in the Group Stage. Additionally, their Round of 32 Knockout Stage game against Croatia was decided in stoppage time (90+4′). The Portuguese looked strong enough against lesser competition, but have lacked the pizzazz that put them in World Cup contention in the beginning.

Spain

Spain has been every team’s evil step-father, absolutely spanking the kids all the way to winning Group H. The Spanish have yet to allow a goal, whether it be in the Group or Knockout Stage. Averaging two goals per game across the four played, Spain is the freight train of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Portugal Vs. Spain

Portugal has what it takes, but it’s yet to find it in this World Cup. Forward Cristiano Ronaldo broke his Knockout-Stage goalless streak in his last game, but even that was the benefit of a penalty kick. If they are going to be the first team to beat, or even score on, Spain, he needs to have the game of his life. Can he be the one to score on the Spanish goalkeepers?

The winner of this one will get either the USA or Belgium, which takes place later that day. One of these FIFA heavyweights is headed home, while the winner would likely be the heavy favorite for the remainder of the tournament.
