Former Bellator bantamweight champion Patchy Mix makes his long-awaited UFC debut at UFC 316 on Saturday, June 7, stepping in on short notice to face No. 10-ranked Mario Bautista on the main card. Originally scheduled to be Marlon “Chito” Vera’s bout, the matchup now carries a new narrative. It is this: Mix’s opportunity to make an instant impact and begin his journey toward UFC stardom.

Patchy Mix Has Decorated Resume Outside The UFC

Few debuting fighters in UFC history bring a résumé as decorated and accomplished as Mix. With a career record of 20-1, Mix has quietly built a reputation as one of the most dangerous bantamweights outside of the UFC. His current seven-fight win streak in Bellator includes victories over some of the most respected names in the promotion’s 135-pound division.

Among his most notable wins are two over Magomed Magomedov, a decision over Japanese legend Kyoji Horiguchi (who previously fought for a UFC title in 2015), and stopping both Sergio Pettis and Raufeon Stots—two former Bellator champions. His run culminated in capturing the Bellator Bantamweight Grand Prix title and the undisputed bantamweight crown, cementing his status as one of the best fighters outside the UFC.

Mix himself has said he believes he’s one of the most hyped and accomplished fighters to make the jump to the UFC in recent years, and he’s not wrong. Compared to other high-profile signings like Kai Asakura, Michael Chandler, and Patricio “Pitbull” Freire, Mix may have the strongest competitive record of the bunch. With elite grappling, strong finishing instincts, and a relentless motor, he arrives not only as a prospect but as a contender.

The Right Opponent To Make A Statement

Making a strong UFC debut is critical for a fighter hoping to build star power, and Mix has been given a golden opportunity with this matchup. Bautista is a ranked fighter, but also one of the most disliked on the roster following his last performance.

In his most recent bout, Bautista defeated fan favorite José Aldo in what many fans considered one of the most frustrating and boring fights of 2024. Rather than engaging in striking exchanges, Bautista leaned heavily on cage control, stalling the fight with prolonged clinch work while doing little damage. The performance, while technically sound, drew heavy criticism and boos from both live crowds and online communities. For many, making an Aldo fight unwatchable is practically a cardinal sin.

This puts Mix in a perfect position to flip the narrative and instantly become a fan favorite. With Bautista viewed as a stalling, grind-heavy fighter, fans will be rooting for Mix to bring the action. If he finishes the fight decisively, especially by submission or knockout, then he could immediately win over a large portion of the UFC fanbase.

Ready For The Spotlight

At 31 years old, Mix is in his athletic prime. His grappling is already among the best in the division, and he has the confidence and résumé to match. What he lacks in UFC experience, he makes up for with high-level competition in Bellator and a consistent ability to finish fights. More than just a grinder, Mix is dangerous anywhere the fight goes.

A dominant win over a ranked UFC opponent would do more than introduce him to fans. A win would plant him firmly in the bantamweight title conversation. With Sean O’Malley challenging Merab Dvalishvili for the title in this card’s main event, adding Mix to the mix becomes more exciting.

He also garnered the support of fans at the UFC 316 press conference. If he can parlay this support into an exciting fight, then he could very well become a new fan favorite.

End Of My Patchy Mix Rant

UFC 316 may be the beginning of a new era for the bantamweight division. Mix is not here to prove he belongs; he’s here to show he’s already elite. If he delivers the kind of performance that he’s known for, then UFC fans may quickly find themselves with a new name to rally behind.

With Mix and Bautista both being talented grapplers, this fight has the potential to be very boring. I think Mix is simply too much for Bautista, both on the feet and on the ground. I can’t guarantee a finish, and wouldn’t bet on it. If I were a betting man, then you would see my money on Mix moneyline at -180. Take it and feel confident about it.
