Denver, Cleveland, Boston, and Philadelphia have the strongest combination of star talent and recent team results among this group. DeRozan benefits from joining an established contender without needing to become the primary creator, while Harden has recent conference-finals experience and George enters a 56-win Boston team. Embiid’s individual production remains elite, but the 76ers’ 45-37 record and his 38 regular-season games make availability a larger variable than it is for the other leading candidates.
DeRozan enters his age-37 season after averaging 18.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 4.1 assists over 77 games for the Sacramento Kings. The Nuggets signed the six-time All-Star to a one-year deal. The veteran scorer now has a chance to join Jokić and Murray without carrying the offensive burden he handled earlier in his career.
Denver’s 54-28 record and league-best 122.1 points per game in 2025-26 provide a strong foundation. The Nuggets also finished first in offensive rating, with Jokić and Murray already established as the primary offensive engines.
DeRozan’s role could make the fit particularly valuable. Denver can use his midrange scoring and secondary creation without requiring him to become the primary option, while the team’s roster overhaul makes lineup fit an important postseason variable.
Denver’s six-game first-round loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves exposed the defensive questions that could become more significant with DeRozan in the lineup. The Nuggets allowed 116.9 points per game during the regular season, creating a clear postseason test for the veteran forward.
Harden averaged 20.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 7.7 assists in 26 regular-season games for Cleveland in 2025-26. The Cavaliers went 52-30, scored 119.5 points per game, and advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals before losing four straight games to the New York Knicks.
Harden’s value comes from organization as much as scoring. Donovan Mitchell remains the primary offensive star, while Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen provide an interior foundation around Harden’s pick-and-roll creation and passing.
The playoff production was more complicated. Harden averaged 19.2 points and 5.5 assists during the postseason but shot 41.0% from the field and 29.9% from three-point range. Cleveland’s title hopes therefore depend partly on whether Harden can maintain enough efficiency when defenses become more targeted.
George averaged 17.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.6 assists in 37 games during the 2025-26 season before joining Boston. George also shot 39.2% from three-point range, giving the Celtics another perimeter scorer alongside Jayson Tatum.
Boston finished 56-26 and allowed 107.2 points per game, but a seven-game first-round loss to Philadelphia highlighted the need for additional creation after Brown’s departure. George’s ability to defend multiple positions and contribute without dominating possessions fits a roster built around Tatum. The Celtics’ core outlook provides additional context for his expected role.
Mike Conley averaged 4.5 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists for Minnesota and projects primarily as a veteran reserve guard. Conley’s experience could help Boston’s second unit, but George is the veteran addition with the greater potential to provide secondary scoring, perimeter defense, and ball-handling next to Tatum.
Embiid averaged 26.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 3.9 assists across 38 regular-season games in 2025-26. The 76ers went 45-37, beat the Celtics in the first round, and then lost four straight games to New York in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Embiid remained highly productive when available, averaging 24.0 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 5.7 assists across six playoff games. The limited regular-season workload makes availability the defining variable for the Philadelphia. The 76ers reshaped the roster around Embiid by moving George to Boston in the Brown trade and adding veterans including LeBron James, Anfernee Simons, Dean Wade, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.
Gobert played 76 games in 2025-26 and averaged 10.9 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 1.7 assists while shooting 68.2% from the field. Gobert also produced 8.7 win shares, giving the Timberwolves a durable defensive anchor throughout the regular season.
Minnesota finished 49-33, eliminated Denver in the first round, and then pushed the San Antonio Spurs to six games in the Western Conference semifinals. The postseason run provided another example of Gobert’s defensive value translating to playoff basketball, although his 52.6% free-throw percentage and offensive limitations remain exploitable late in games.
Lillard missed the entire 2025-26 season while recovering from an Achilles injury. The Portland Trail Blazers went 42-40 and lost their first-round series to the Spurs in five games, but Portland’s roster has changed substantially since that postseason exit.
The Trail Blazers now have Ja Morant, Jrue Holiday, Deni Avdija, Shaedon Sharpe, Toumani Camara, Donovan Clingan, and Lillard under contract. The Portland roster gives Lillard considerably more established talent around him than the 42-win record alone suggests.
The backcourt also creates a significant fit question. Morant and Holiday give the Trail Blazers other established ball-handlers, meaning Lillard’s return must add enough shooting and shot creation to justify the crowded guard rotation. The Achilles recovery remains the primary variable behind that equation.
Butler averaged 20.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.9 assists across 38 games for the Golden State Warriors in 2025-26. Golden State went 23-15 with Butler and 14-30 without him, making the split a useful measure of how much his two-way presence affected the team.
Butler’s season ended after he tore the ACL in his right knee in January. Surgery followed in February, and his recovery remains the central issue entering 2026-27.
The Warriors finished 37-45, making Butler’s return especially important to the team’s outlook. Stephen Curry remains the offensive centerpiece, while Butler can create offense, defend larger players, and reduce Curry’s workload when available.
Harris averaged 13.3 points and 5.1 rebounds over 63 games for the Detroit Pistons in 2025-26. Detroit finished 60-22 and earned the Eastern Conference’s No. 1 seed, while Harris averaged 18.1 points and 7.2 rebounds during the playoffs.
Harris now moves to San Antonio on a two-year, $31 million deal after helping the Pistons reach the second round. The Spurs finished 62-20 in 2025-26, giving Harris another strong team context alongside Victor Wembanyama.
Harris does not need to reproduce his Detroit scoring volume in San Antonio. Efficient frontcourt scoring, experience, and lineup flexibility around Wembanyama define his potential value.
DeRozan’s situation stands out because Denver can reduce his offensive workload while surrounding him with Jokić and Murray. A 54-win foundation and established offensive hierarchy give the veteran a strong environment for his first championship pursuit.
Harden has recent conference-finals experience, while George enters Boston after a 56-win season. Embiid offers elite production when available, and Gobert anchors a Minnesota team that already advanced through the first playoff round.
Career résumé explains why these players remain notable NBA veterans without a ring, but the 2026-27 championship question depends more heavily on their current environments. DeRozan’s combination of star support, role, team performance, and manageable offensive responsibility gives Denver the strongest overall setup among this group.
