Manchester United have just lost the Europa League final against Tottenham, but this isn’t the least of their problems. In addition to the unfortunate defeat, Alejandro Garnacho and his brother have spoken out against Ruben Amorim’s decision to bench the young star.
The drama started by Garnacho came after he wasn’t named to the starting XI. So far this season, the 20-year-old star has played in 57 matches across all competitions. It was expected by everyone that Garnacho was going to start the match.
It was surprising then that Amorim chose to start the game with Mason Mount instead of the Argentinian. Both Garnacho and his brother didn’t have a great reaction to the head coach’s decision.
Following the game, Garnacho talked in an interview about Amorim’s decision to let him play for only 20 minutes at the end of the game. According to The Daily Mail, he said, “I played every round to help the team reach the final, and today I only got 20 minutes.”
Not only did Garnacho show his dissatisfaction, but he also hinted that he is thinking about his future at Manchester United. “The game has an influence, but the season itself and the situation at the club… I’m going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens next,” he said according to TYC Sports.
Garnacho wasn’t the only one upset by Amorim’s decision to sideline him. His brother and agent, Robert, took to Instagram to share his feelings.
“Working as no one else, helping every round, coming from two goals in the last two finals, just to be on the pitch for 19 mins and get thrown under the bus. Wowe hahahahahaha,” he wrote on Instagram.
It is understandable that Robert would want to defend his brother, but this kind of behavior isn’t the way to go with this situation.
Garnacho didn’t just show his dissatisfaction with Amorim’s decision, but he also talked about Manchester United’s terrible season.
“It’s obviously tough for everyone after this season, which was really s**t , both now and after losing the League Cup final (Community Shield). We didn’t beat anyone,” he said to reporters.
The drama at Manchester United kept going as Amorim had words of his own to share. When asked about his decision to start Mount over Garnacho, the head coach said, “It’s easy to say that now. Who missed the big opportunity in the first half in the semi-final? Garnacho. Football is like that.”
The Argentinian might not be delighted with his coach’s remarks. It could only make the tension between the two escalate.
While it is understandable that Garnacho would be disappointed about not starting, he shouldn’t have acted the way he acted. His brother as well shouldn’t have intervened. Now, the Argentinian might only anger Manchester United’s head coach.
Amorim is the kind of coach known to hold grudges, which was clearly shown in his treatment of Marcus Rashford. If Garnacho wants to remain at the club, he has to watch out for his behavior.
There is some interest in the winger from other clubs including Napoli, but nothing is guaranteed. So far, no agreements have been reached with Manchester United, which might mean that Garnacho won’t be leaving anytime soon. He should choose his next move carefully. An apology won’t hurt too.
It’s not professional to act the way Garnacho did. Of course, any player would want to help his team in such an important final. At the end of the day though, it’s the head coach’s decision to make. After all, he is the one who is going to be blamed if he made mistakes.
