The New York Knicks just completed one of the greatest postseason runs of the 2020s, and statistically, one of the greatest in league history. New York finished the playoffs 16-3, won 12 games by double digits and lost its three games by only six combined points. Across 19 postseason games, the Knicks outscored their opponents by 14.9 points per game, the largest average playoff point differential in NBA history. In a way, the Knicks didn’t need a hall-of-famer on their team, not with this squad’s chemistry.
The Knicks’ chemistry was on display throughout the playoffs, in how well they played together. Jalen Brunson controlled the offense and closed out games, Karl-Anthony Towns supplied scoring and rebounding, OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges defended the perimeter, and Josh Hart connected the lineup with rebounding, transition play, and secondary creation.
Brunson stood at the front of that balance. He averaged 25.7 points during the postseason and had accumulated 144 clutch playoff points since 2023, nearly 60 more than any other player over that span. He eventually won Finals MVP after scoring a Knicks Finals-record 45 points in Game Five.
New York was also the only team that scored more efficiently in the 2026 playoffs than it had during the regular season. Its defense improved at the same time, creating the rare combination of an offense that became sharper under pressure and a defense that sharpened under pressure. With this level of team efficiency. One decorated NBA veteran with one of the greatest résumés in basketball history was aware of what he’d be getting himself into.
With a team functioning this well, LeBron James’ agent, Rich Paul, made it clear that LeBron James did not want to interfere with what New York had built. Paul said James would have chosen the Knicks had they not won the championship, but the title changed the situation because New York had clearly become Brunson’s team.
However, reports and rumors connected James to the Knicks throughout his free-agency process.
James carries one of the greatest résumés in basketball history: four NBA championships, four regular-season MVP awards, four Finals MVP awards, a record 22 consecutive All-Star selections and the league’s all-time scoring record. He had also won championships with three different franchises.
The issue was whether adding a 41-year-old superstar–with his own playing style and championship agenda–was worth changing a structure that had just produced a historically dominant postseason.
NBA teams have learned that collecting famous players does not automatically preserve chemistry.
The 2021-22 Los Angeles Lakers provide the clearest warning, when they added Russell Westbrook to a roster already built around James and Anthony Davis. The team hosted several future Hall of Fame players and entered the season with championship expectations, but the fit never worked. The Lakers finished 33-49, placed 11th in the Western Conference and even missed the Play-In Tournament.
That Lakers team did deal with injuries, so Westbrook’s arrival was not the only reason it failed. Still, it demonstrated how quickly roles, spacing, and hierarchy can collapse when another ball-dominant star is inserted into an established structure.
New York had already answered its most important questions. Brunson was the leader. Towns was the second offensive centerpiece. Anunoby, Bridges and Hart understood their responsibilities. Adding James could have forced the Knicks to redistribute possessions, redefine late-game roles and shift attention away from the players who had just delivered a championship. Knicks, however, are focused on retaining their core playoff-dominant team that won them the 2026 championship with a level of efficiency never seen before.
The Knicks are returning nine of the ten players from their championship playoff rotation. Their major loss during the free-agency period was Mitchell Robinson, who signed with Boston. New York replaced him with veteran center Andre Drummond on a one-year deal worth approximately $3.9 million rather than making a move that changed the identity of the starting lineup.
The projected core remains Brunson, Towns, Anunoby, Bridges and Hart. The bench includes Miles McBride, Landry Shamet, Jordan Clarkson, Jose Alvarado and Drummond.
The organization is attempting to preserve a championship team and what works, which are antithetical to James’ goals.
James was looking for one final opportunity to win a fifth championship and strengthen an already historic legacy. He ultimately joined Philadelphia on a two-year, $8 million contract, teaming with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown.
The Knicks have an entirely different objective around reproducing a championship run, while James is aiming to add another ring to his already stacked resume.
The New York Knicks are focused on retaining a championship team built around chemistry and Jalen Brunson’s leadership. James was searching for one final ring and another ring in his legacy.
The player and the team had entirely different goals. New York made the right decision by choosing chemistry over LeBron James.
